Seriously Overpriced Cars

Someone looking for cheap, trouble free car as a tool?
Would it be trouble free, though? It would need new tyres at a minimum, plus who knows what state the rubber seals and tubing will be after 23 years of barely being used.It was based on the Astra E, how readily available are spares these days?

In my experience of buying low miles cars, there is no reason it couldn't be. Decent basic service and check over usually does it I'd rather buy a car like this with an MOT history like that for 2k than something else. We are talking banger money these days, go look what else 2kish buys.
Come on guys.....The Daewoo Nexia / Lanos was based on early 80's GM underpinnings and tech.....they were poor cars when brand new, let alone 23 years later. From memory, crash safety was pretty much non-existent due to cost cutting and old/poor chassis design. There is no polishing a turd on this one to justify the price, even with it's mileage which I cannot imagine has done it any favours - it's a £500 car, if that, maybe £750 if someone was desperate for a run around.Yes....admittedly £2.5k isn't much money these days.....but that'll still see you into a low owner/mileage Mazda 2s, Honda Jazz/EP Civic, Yaris/Corolla, etc.....the Daewoo wouldn't get a look in.

Please note, at no point did I say it was a good car, I just don't think it's a bad buy for someone who only wants simple, basic transport and doesn't care about the badge. I think you undervalue it, I'd see that at around £1500 if I was selling it, but each to their own.
Fair enough.....I guess just saying £2-2.5k isn't 'throw away' money and I'd still be looking at alternatives that were safer, reliable and readily serviceable/repairable, of which there is plentiful choice at that price or less. I mean, none of them will be lookers, but look at that Daewoo. Just look at it. *shudder* MattyD803 said:

as an aside - by the logic in bold no-one should ever buy a 'classic' car for the same reasons. I'd hazard a guess that anyone who buys this heap is just looking to bimble about town and go to the odd car show (Festival of the Unexceptional) at which point the (perceived?) lack of safety isn't really an issueYes....admittedly £2.5k isn't much money these days.....but that'll still see you into a low owner/mileage Mazda 2s, Honda Jazz/EP Civic, Yaris/Corolla, etc.....the Daewoo wouldn't get a look in.

I did earlier state in the thread that the ONLY reason I can think someone would want this vehicle would be to take/display at FOTU.....can't imagine that is barely worth it in itself, you'd want a strong love for the brand too....Don't get me wrong, in recent years i've owned a Mk1 & Mk2 Golf GTi and 2 x 205 GTi.....for a bit of weekend fun/tinkering and I fully appreciate the balance of 'safety' in the name of enjoyment......but during my ownership, none of those vehicles were ever used for carting my family around in and longer/motorway trips were minimised - they all very much inspired similar levels of crash protection as would be offered by a crisp packet.... The point about safety was that for the same money, you could much better in the world of bland and uninspiring. (I believe the Lanos was a 2 star car, but the motoring press made a point about it's rating against competition at the time - completely understandable when you consider the aged design).
IMO, the car in question has ZERO appeal as a classic nor is it remotely 'quirky' or 'fun' hence I see literally no real draw factor....to me at least....and hence I find that price a bit of joke. Anyway, as we concluded earlier, each to their own. Perhaps it will get snapped up by someone on the Daewoo UK owner's club....

the thing is though that the base spec models now are the rarest of the rare. Everyone and their dog wanted to have the RS/GTi/SRi/AMG/turbonutterbd versionso they get preserved. The L (or even lesser) models were totally unwanted to the point that we see the above
And, they still do, if you didn't lust after it when it was new, you're not going to now.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
