You wont encounter any issues by taking it off, just make sure that if you have to do any cutting that you clean off all of the burred plastic and clean the piping out fully, you don't want your engine ingesting any bits of plastic! Make sure the hole is sealed off properly and solidly too afterwards. I've done it to a couple of cars in the reasonably distant past and not had any issues. It'll make it a little louder but not by much I'd have thought.
Given that one of the few bits of legislation to be worthwhile regarding cars is the noticeable improvement in the reduction of noise over the last decade or so, and hence a massive improvement in the quality of life of millions, what sort of selfish antisocial person would feel the need to illegally undo that?

Plastic? Exhaust? Ingest?Also, resonator removal can actually reduce performance. They are there for both NVH and volumetric efficiency reasons.
I had the exact same car and did the exact same thing, but it cost me £100 - £300 is steep for a couple of bits of pipe!.
It made an amazing difference- 0 drone and only made a difference when i floored it. I found a new route home to include an underpass as it sounded evil.
0 downside as cruising it sounded standard, but drop it in to 2nd and floor it and it sounded like a V8 should.
Do it you will not regret it.
