Why does PH not mention the move for FWD at all?
What move to FWD? Buy this now if you want a new RWD small family hatch.
Over on What Car? , they report that the smallest petrol motor in this one is the 4 cyl 118i. In other words the rather fab 1.5 litre 3 cyl in the new Mini won't be available...
I'm guessing the 3-pot would be too expensive to reengineer for a longitudinal installation. I dare say it'll appear in the 2-series people carrier thing. Especially if the next generation 1-series really is going entirely FWD; they'd be putting all that investment in for only half a model cycle of sales.

The price list I have here lists the 116i with a 109 PS 3-cylinder petrol engine and the 116d/116d ED with a 116 PS 3-cylinder diesel engine. Both with 1496 cm3 capacity.3,4L/100km (83 mpg) and 89g/km for the 116d ED
edit: corrected and added some numbers.

Ah I wasn't aware there was a 3-cylinder diesel as well. That probably makes it much more appealing for them, I suspect it'd be a big seller. kambites said:

Apparently the next 5 series will have a 3 cylinder engine... I know it will be as powerful as my 6 cylinder 520, but still *shudder*You took the words out of my mouth. I always hated the front lights the end of it by the grill, just looked stupid, they have slightly addressed it now. The back just did not look right before, if you replaced the BMW badge for a VW badge it would not look out of place in a VW lineup.
Still not the best of cars, 2 series a better proposition.

The front end looks better, the rear end looks less like a VW Polo now. So all in all, a bit better looking.

No, the've said the facelift of the current 3-series will get 3-cylinder engines at some point(though possibly not right from the start of production later in 2015 as BMW often do an invisible engine change between visual facelifts)TWPC said:

F20 125d as a replacement for my 2012 F30 320d could be a possibility now because this does look better. Not sure the chassis will be as sharp though and will probably require adaptive dampers to ride properly as is the norm with BMW these days, they certainly made the F30 ride and drive much better than the standard dampers.

Im glad I bought my M135i last year. They look great in the flesh. Maybe I need to see this in the flesh too but I think it looks rank.
I actually like all the 1-series, go figure... Agreed the rear-end looks bloated but honestly I'd be ok with that, considering the chassis and power train these cars come with. Congrats on yours!Im glad I bought my M135i last year. They look great in the flesh. Maybe I need to see this in the flesh too but I think it looks rank.
I'd certainly choose one over either an A-Class, A3 or Dullswagen Golf.
Wow, pretty big changes seeing the before and after pictures!
125d does sound like an absolute cracker of a car though, roughly same performance as my 130i but with much better economy! shows how far diesels have come in performance terms I suppose.
Still, the M135i is where i'll be at in a few years.
