Those are broker prices before any options and the Cupra 280 is better specced as standard. I have driven the Cupra 280 and the Golf R (unfortunatley not the GTI PP) both with DSG and as a driving experience I preferred the Cupra because of the wonders of the diff. The R was better at acceleration from 1st gear and has a slightly nicer interior and launch control is a blast. The 4wd drive part is not something I value, yes, like for like against FWD the traction will be better, but I haven't had an issue at all in the wet in my FWD drive cars in the past, including my 300lbs ft of torque Leon I had previously, as long as you have the right tyres on then you don't need 4wd. I imagine the GTI PP drives the same as the Cupra 280 albeit slower.
Personally, I just can't see past the Cupra, both Golfs (GTI and R) are too expensive for what they are in comparison with the Cupra. Yes the interior of the Golf's are slightly better but the Cupra interior is perfectly fine, it is genuinely really nice. Softer plastics and gloss black plastic finishes alone does not justify a £3k price difference (not to mention a 50bhp defecit)!
In regard to depreciation, at the above prices I can't see the Cupra losing any more value than the Golf GTI will. I really wanted a Cupra 280 last year but there weren't any deals on at the time and opted for a Fiesta ST3 with the MP215 upgrade because it was just that good.
Both the Golf and the Cupra are great cars but the smart money is on the Cupra 280.

I don't think a diesel would help it's sale, it doesn't have the same history and pedigree of the Golf GTI for example, and if there is only a few quid in it on a PCP/Lease I'd expect most would pick the Golf. The Seat has a nice interior but it's not a Golf Interior which is a much beter place to be with higher quality materials.
I've had mine a few months now have changed the air intake and the tyres to the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2, don't plan a remap maybe exahust to get some aural goodness and maybe intercooler. I like the fact it's understated isn't showy at all, and it came with adaptive dampers and also the LSD.
It's been on track couple of times and a few more planned next year, total joy to drive on track.

I have a Grey 3 door with the Sub8 pack coming in March, interesting to know it might be one of the first few in the country.
As far as styling goes I think they are much more interesting to look at than the Golf and while the R might be faster from the the lights due to the 4wd advantage the back to back tests by Autocar and Auto Express seem to show the Cupra is a more agile and quicker car once off the line.
That being said the Golf R is a great machine and I wouldn't knock someone for owning one... I would just prefer the Cupra on my drive
