The Mrs car broke down yesterday, and it is not financially viable to repair, subsequently she now wants a new car.

She likes the driving position of 4x4/SUV.

Going to look at a 2003 Rav4 2.0 diesel, these car do not really float my boat so I don't know much about them, can anyone give me some advise please?

Thanks

Check the clutch is good, they cost a fortune to change on the early RAV diesels!

Ok thanks, I'll keep that in mind.

Are these the best cars to go for in this class?

My wife had a RAV4 2.0 D4D before her current car. It had a new clutch and flywheel fitted by the previous owner at great expense. If one you've found has had it done, it will be okay for around 70k miles. If not, you could be in for problems!
