2017 RRS

Love:

Comfort on a long journey across Europe.
Double glazing and acoustic glass - peace.
Driving position.

Hate:

It's pitiful reliability, eight dealer visits and three callouts in 9 months.
My perpetual fear that it's going to destroy itself at any given moment.
It's idiosyncratic attitude to my iPhone and CarPlay.

Bentayga 6.0 W12

Like:
Interior is pretty amazing but subtle
Engines a bit of a beast.
Adjustable air suspension with custom mode.

Dislike:
Parcel shelf rattles like my 1982 XR2 did.
Wheels make me nervous
Access / entry mode is 3 presses of the touchscreen where a RR is a dedicated button on the door (like me that).

2019 Dodge Challenger 392 Widebody

Love:
1. Relentless acceleration
2. Looks/sounds bad-to-the-bone
3. (Finally) capable in the turns as well as the straights

Dislikes (no hatred):
1. Somewhat thirsty
2. Insane amounts of brake-dust
3. It's a bit of a lard-ass at 4200lbs

BMW Z4 Coupe.

I love the N/A straight 6 petrol engine, RWD and manual gearbox.

Not so keen on the EPAS, run-flat tyres or electric water pump! laugh

Passat B7 (facelift) Estate 2.0Tdi

  • Excellent fuel consumption
  • Very comfortable on long journeys
  • Massive loadspace
  • Persistently refuses to connect to my phone (apparently this is a common issue)
  • Auto dim rear view mirror with a life of its own (ditto)
  • Estate loadspace cover that won't stay put (ditto)

1971 Volkswagen

LIKE:
*So much character
*Never less than fun and involving to drive
*Makes everyone who sees it happy

HATE:
*Only has two electrical things and one, the lights, don't work very well
*The other, the stereo, also doesn't work very well
*Carb induction noise louder than the exhaust. And the exhaust's LOUD

Likes:

2011 Renaultsport Clio 200

Likes:
1. The way it flows along curvy B-roads. We go out of our way to plan routes that avoid boring straights. Passengers are perplexed as to why the route is twice as long....
2. Chasing the upshift beep at 7500 rpm with the engine screaming.
3. Subtle enough that most people ignore it as a tarted-up cooking Clio, but familiar enough to petrolheads that it starts conversations in car parks.

Dislikes:
1. The cost! 22.5 mpg, £300 annual tax...
2. Value dropping as we pile on the miles, but it's just so fun to drive. Original plan for it to be a 'weekend car' was quickly abandoned.
3. A few creaks and shakes in the interior.

370Z Roadster...

Like
The noise it makes from its upgraded intake and exhaust.
Syncro rev match is so addictive.
The old school feel to the way it drives.

Dislike
No reach for the steering wheel.
Interior feels a touch ordinary.
The car could/should be lighter.

2017 Mini Cooper S...

Like
It feels small and light(even though it actually isn't).
Fun to drive and it makes me smile.
The fact its turbo charged so it always feels quick(even though it isn't actually that quick at least it feels it).

Dislike
The interior isn't very well screwed together with lots of rattles.
It is only worth about 10 pence even though its list price with options was really high for a shopping car.
It spins the wheels up far too easily and it needs a LSD for me.

Mercedes GLC350d...

Like
The interior looks/feels nice because I've been used to how plain BMW interiors are.
Very comfortable and it is great at covering miles.
Higher driving position.

Dislike
The rattly noise the diesel engine makes.
The auto gearbox doesn't need 9 gears and it gets too flustered.
The stuck on sat nav screen looks daft.

2006 Z4 Coupe

Like:
1. The styling, side profile in particular.
2. The noise.
3. The power. I appreciate 260 bhp is dismal by today's standards but for me it's more than powerful enough.

Dislike:
1. The fuel consumption. 30+ mpg seems to be achievable for other owners but unless I'm doing 60 mph on the motorway I can't get anywhere near that.
2. The electric throttle, at times it feels more like an on/off switch.
3. The lack of space for a spare wheel - I ditched the runflats to improve ride quality and handling and now have to keep a spare wheel in the boot.

2004 Focus Estate

Like:
1. The boot capacity, particularly with seats down. I've used this car as a small van many times for work, for moving house, endless tip runs and even stuffed a double airbed in the back to sleep in it overnight before early morning hikes.
2. The fact it's worth nothing, I couldn't care less if it gets scratched in a car park and I don't fear using the bumpers from time to time when parking in tight spaces.
3. The fact it costs me next to nothing, the occasional replacement of consumables is all it's needed in my 6 years / 70k miles of ownership.

Dislike:
1. The spiders which have taken up residency after a few runs to the tip with garden waste.
2. The rust which will likely result in the car being scrapped despite the mechanicals being in decent condition.
3. The constant calls from people who don't understand the joy of running a shed to buy something newer.

Quantum Silver Aston Martin DBS V12

likes: , all ways feels special every time you step in for a drive...have been known to tell the wife just popping out for a pint of milk ....only to return 100 mile later without the milk .............dam knew there was something
:Lovely engine sound
interior ,build quality superb and Bang and Olufsen sound system

dislikes first gear ratio , is too low always hitting the rev limiter from 1st to second and 2nd to third .....probably driving style
Fuel tank ....a bit small for a GT car especially if you drive in sport mode with exhaust valves fully open ...sub 10mpg ?
parking ...care needed where you park especially odd trips to supermarkets & alloys extend beyond tyres so even slight kerbing will result in damaged wheels , fitting front / rear reverse cameras from Aston installations has made it much a much easier experience.

- The many noises it makes from the supercharger whine to limiter bashing in vtec to recirc valve whoosh when changing gear.
- Gets lots of attention/turns heads
- looks more or less standard but is 350bhp/250lb-ft

- crap clifford alarm system that sets the alarm off if I don't start it in the correct sequence.

2005 Subaru Outback

Love:
1. Smooooth flat 6 petrol engine
2. Brilliant in ice/snow and better off-road than a jacked up estate has any right to be
3. Really comfy

Hate:
1. Interior lights are idiotic
2. The fact that when it (frequently) logs a fault with a lambda sensor, that makes no difference whatsoever to how it drives, you can't use cruise control
3. Autobox robs it of much more performance than is reasonable
