RE: Lexus LFA Nurburgring: Spotted
Discussion
"In August 2011, an NP driven by Akira Iida brought the LFA's 'Ring time down to a new production car record of 7min 14.6sec, then the fastest lap time for a current, regular production car..."
A record that lasted 2 weeks and then fell to the Viper ACR by 4.5 seconds.
I don't really get the LFA, I guess. The 'regular' version is surpassed by several less-expensive vehicles on the ring. Its looks are somewhat understated, pretty, but not jaw-dropping. It was supposed to showcase a lot of things for Toyota, perhaps it did, but I just never have gotten past the rather common criticism that it was overpriced.

I hope you value a car's worth on more than just it's ring time otherwise things like an E Type, Rolls Royce, Lotus Elise etc have no chance? Yes it seems expensive on the face of it but an Aventador which will be built in far greater numbers and offers a similar mix of exotic materials and technologies is getting on for the same price as the standard car so it's not that ridiculous really. I can only remember Topgear really going to town about the price and again that was merely for effect rather than having a valid point, I remember them doing the whole "It's not 8 times faster than a GTR is it" routine. It's looks obviously aren't going to be to everyone's tastes, I like it even if it does have a slightly large bum but it's really the impression it has left on so many of the respected journo's that is highly impressive, especially when you consider it's their first real effort at such a thingA record that lasted 2 weeks and then fell to the Viper ACR by 4.5 seconds.

The NSX was surpassed in performance by several less expensive vehicles too. Didn't stop it becoming a yardstick very quickly and didn't stop it becoming both the defining Japanese supercar and redefining the European establishment's products as a result.FFS, ignore absolutes - they DO not make good performance cars, or stuff like Audi RS's would have been at the top of the list for ages and the MX5 and Mk3 MR2 would be castigated.
- look at that absolute jewel of an engine - no more powerful than the GT-R lump (for example) but so much more evocative, so much more responsive, and SO much better-sounding.
- look at the engineering that's gone into the body.
- look at the attention to detail in the set-up and handling.
They lost money on every LF-A - people have called it over-priced because:-
- It's Japanese not Italian - WGAF!
- It's basic stats (bhp in particular) are eclipsed by far cheaper cars - but then the same issue can be levied at the GT3 RS and the Carrera GT.
I took part in last year's Supercar Event and was lucky enough to spend a session driving behind the LEXUS UK demo LFA. If my numbers ever come up, I would have one of these in a heartbeat

How can that be so cheap and what's the going rate for a human kidney?
Organs are worth vast sums of money on the (illegal) black market, but not much of that money reaches the actual donor...If you've been tea-total all your life - your liver could be the biggest earner of them all; so I heard.

Yeah only surpassed due to turbos, Ferrari are the only other manufacture who could get 570bhp out of a small 4.8L V10 N/A weighing less than a V6, Lfa does weight 1490kg 100kg more than 458 and those 911's.FFS, ignore absolutes - they DO not make good performance cars, or stuff like Audi RS's would have been at the top of the list for ages and the MX5 and Mk3 MR2 would be castigated.

Didn't a Buddhist monk order one as his only earthly possession? What an amazing vehicle and proper respect to Yamaha for helping develop that exhaust. Saw this in the backdrop of Aunty Beeb's programme swapping two used car salesmen from different ends of the market. Quite a coup for Macari's to have one in the showroom, let alone a Nurburgring spec. One of the really appealing things about this car is its uniqueness. No-one else would build it quite like that with the result that it looks special but only those in the know understand how special.
I think when this car was announced, the car world wasn't expecting a 599 GTO beater.
More supercars and extreme cars need to come from Japan - they clearly know how to make them.
OT - Isn't it funny how the GTR et al were marked as soulless due to computer tech, yet European cars are now full of the tech first premiered in Japanese cars and is seen as "progress".
One more point - they had it right about the non-adoption of diesels and responded with hybrid tech..now what is Europe doing??
This car is magnificent and something that really captures the imagination. Roll on the NSX.

IIRC a Lexus test driver tragically lost his life in a prototype NP LFA on the public roads outside the Ring.
