Ling v Mike Brewer - Twitter
Discussion
Anyone who has a problem with Ling's website has clearly never dealt with any small businesses in the far east. Her website is a bit full on, but many Korean of Indonesian companies are not far behind.
What ever happened I think Mike Brewers downfall is calling someone a nutjob and the personal attacks. Ling may have sworn but at least she avoided personal attacks.

I'd prefer not. She's grating on me already and I only learned of her existence this morning.
There is little so unprofessional as public tittle-tattling. Most successful companies practise corporate communications carefully for a damned good reason.
Most LARGE companies do practice bland corporate PR. Some don't, Ryan Air and Paddy Power being two that come to mind. Small companies can be much more outspoken and less bland. Big companies want to make most of the people happy most of the time, small companies can do well making some people happy all of the time. There is little so unprofessional as public tittle-tattling. Brewer shouldn't have blown, but he shouldn't have been mentioned
Ling was just re-tweeting something someone else had said that included his name. Thats how twitter works. If he is going to get annoyed by people re-tweeting or mentioning his name he should probably get off twitter. No one said anything against him until he went off on one. All that was said was rate my car said that he had mentioned them. He took Ling re-tweeting this as some kind of personal insult. If he does not understand how twitter works he should probably shut his account.
Ling on the other hand seems to know exactly how it works and exactly how to play the game.

My company did a set of alloys for Wheeler Dealers, free of course, in return for a 0.00000000001 of a second clip of our logo.
I didn't take them up on the offer a second time when they called again. Not a pleasant man.
He took information off a website of mine and used it in one of his programmes. It'd have been nice if he'd given my site a namecheck but instead used a generic: There's lots of information on websites . . . with a vague partial reference to A Resource.I didn't take them up on the offer a second time when they called again. Not a pleasant man.
Sill, got it on video and was thinking of adding it to the site but instead just opted for Patronised by Wheeler Dealers. I have a friend who looks like a younger Edd China, and it frequently stopped in the street. He's only 6'3". People tell him he looks older on the telly. But not on Dave one assumes.
This is why I don't have much time for social media. Too many trivial arguments over nothing! I remember my final visit to Kwik Fit ... all the staff talked about was an argument ...on Facebook. I don't give a fk :-) ... so stick that in yer ttter :-)

meh - storm in a tea-cup. Someone is stressed out and snaps at someone else who then proceeds to milk it for all its worth and then proceeds to flog it to death. Looks like Ling has decided to keep this going on and on - wanting to get another inappropriate reaction maybe? A bit like dash-cam footage - what's happened previously? We don't know LV could have been baiting MB and he's snapped, MB could be a tt, MB could be really stressed about any number of things etc etc
FWIW I hope that MB isn't a tt in real life but if he is it really doesn't affect me - what does affect me though is the free publicity Ling is getting (I do see the irony of adding to it!!) and reading threads about her mad as a box of acid-tripping squirrels

Thanks for the twitter 101, V8 - but when I say I don't understand twitter - it's not the mechanics that baffles me.
When you get a tweet, it often has slightly less than 1 sentance in it, surrounded by all sorts of # and @ bks. In order to read the content, you end up reading 3 lines of text, for 1 line of content - does my head in.
Someone said that "industry leaders" insights can be good - but I'm not able to see what can be said in 140 characters that's actually insightful and not just a soundbite. In my job, when an industry leader wants to say something, they publish it in Nature or write an article in an industry magazine. I don't read them, but those that do seek them out are looking for a lot more detail than could be had in 1 line...

You can fit a URL in 140 characters. Especially since Twitter has its own version of TinyURL which means that even the longest URLs can be mentioned in far less than 140 characters. Likewise a picture attachment. As I said earlier, you can use Twitter as a news ticker if you so wish, alerting users to content that resides elsewhere (eg. on your website).

As Slipperyfish said, @ and # aren't exactly hard to grasp. @ denotes someone's username very similar to an email address (you understand email addresses, I assume?) and # denotes a keyword which is then presented as a hyperlink to all other tweets that also use that keyword. It really isn't hard to understand. Unless you militantly don't *want* to understand, of course.

Love the website BTW Ling.
Re: Mike Brewer - I always assumed he would probably be OK in RL, just a bit of a cock on TV. Like many people, seems he is just a bit of a cock.
I guess there is some history between them - I'm sure Brewer would be quite pleasant if I actually met him - and that is bringing out his cockish behaviour in this instance.
ETA - I would like to add that I still watch & enjoy MBs TV programmes
This is the problem with Twitter and the internet in general though. You don't actually know Mike Brewer or Ling but people seem to draw conclusions from a very limited amount of information. What we have here is a couple of tweets between two people, one side of that argument on here putting her side across (and gaining publicity and no doubt more hits on her website) and a band wagon of people who for whatever reason have decided they don't like Mike Brewer.
Using this as confirmation of your view of Mike, which was oringinally based on once talking to someone who knew a person who'd walked his dog, spoken to his nephew, or some stupid view about labour costs on Wheeler dealers etc isn't particularly logical and says more about the people holding the view than it does about Mike Brewer.
I draw all of my conclusions from the information I have available to me at the time - isn't this what everyone does?
My view of Mike was not really confirmed as I had assumed he would be OK in RL but he seems to be showing cockish behaviour in relation to this - I guessed that this was due to previous between the two and sparked by a misunderstanding on Mike's part regarding the tweet.
My oringal view of Mike was nothing to do with "once talking to someone who knew a person who'd walked his dog, spoken to his nephew, or some stupid view about labour costs on Wheeler dealers etc", simply based on the persona he presents on TV.
Like I said I like the TV programmes he makes (although they would be no worse off without him on the screen IMO) and I am sure if I met him in person, the cheeky chappy persona would be toned down a bit and he would be perfectly reasonable. This opinion would obviously be reviewed if it actually happenned.

I'd pay good money to see Mike Brewer eat the st his mouth spouts every time he contaminates my TV screen. Can't stand the man. And why is it these "cheeky chappy" C list celebrities always turn out to be utter s in real life?
Really? Do you know him in real life?Whether he is C list or not is irrellevant. He is where he is because he does TV that people want to watch and he has a certain talent for what he does.

Ling has previous for this. I remember her doing exactly the same thing on the Safespeed forums - appearing to support the cause and then volte-face when it suited in order to try and rile Paul Smith (RIP) who was getting a lot of media presence at the time. Thankfully, Paul was one of the calmest, coolest guys you could ever meet and didn't rise to it, but Ling rightly took a roasting from the forum members for it.Every other time our paths have crossed the context always seems to be the same - milking controversy for her own gain and exaggerating it all to get sympathy.
Ling is just a publicity we. Always has been, always will be and this is just the latest chapter....
