Ling, I wasn't suggesting Pistonheads traffic was all important. What I'm suspecting is the cumulative effect from Twitter and all the other websites frothing at your paddies helps to increase traffic. PH is just a small part of that. Your philosophy appears to be no publicity is bad publicity. Fair enough.

That's a difficult question, as you are not comparing like with like. And you presume PistonHeads has a massive effect - it doesn't. Google is the daddy. There is always something going on - ie. Some web forum, some newspaper, some radio mention, some blog, Twitter excitement, some promotion like my new SEGA, some website (eg reddit). I can say in January I had about 160,000 uniques.

Feb to date, I've had 45,054 uniques.

This breaks down to

Mon 2nd 5733

Fri 6th 5606
Sat 7th 5492
Today to 5pm 5170

So you can see, Pistonheads is miniscule effect, if at all.

Every web visitor is worth 50p to me, in that my Gross Profit £ as a rule of thumb is half my unique visitors. So in February so far I've done £22,000 GP and had 45k web visits = worth 50p each as near as dammit. I call this my 50p rule. It is consistent, no idea why.

Note that no other web business will give you such open information.

Currently for example, I have 64 unique concurrent visitors browsing my website. This is fairly typical. The image below shows about 1/3 of them. You can see how prevalent PistonHeads visitors are:

This image really puts those people in their place who accuse me of promotion. The promotion effect is tiny. ...unless you can prove otherwise?

It rarely works for independent companies working from a single site as far as return on expenditure is concerned.

Well, many use it. It costs over £1 for a result on the "big" search term "car leasing".

One that is paying adwords is UK Carline: http://www.ukcarline.co.uk/?gclid=CNuVno-F08MCFayW...

You can see that they are breaking the law on advertising VAT as they should be including it, as they clearly mention Personal deals on their homepage. This is common.

If it helps, in spirit of openess here is a graph showing my current Jan/Feb webstats. You can see peaks in January, that clearly correlate to stuff like newspaper articles.

You can also see that Pistonheads (while it may have added to totals), hasn't had any significant impact on Feb. This PH thread started on Thurs 5th Feb.

This nails the lie that my motivation for this PH thread (I didn't start it BTW) is to drive web-traffic.

(I find it more useful to compare on a day basis - Monday = Monday, than a date basis - 1st = 1st as the daily trends can be seen more effectively without interference from "day of week" distortions)
