I also think the world well MB have gone mad with this one.
My C63 went back last month and when looking for a replacement I had a good look at CLA45 and there were just too many negatives:
1. Higher monthly cost to pay for and RUN than my C63 Coupe
2. It was cheaper to buy and M3/M4
3. The interior is very cheap
4. The ride is terrible
5. It needed a minimum of £7k in options
I'm not really sure why these are selling, I just get the A45 if it's specified to a poverty type spec.
The CLA45 will make the new C63 look like a bargain.
My wife has an A220 CDI AMG Sport and both us are counting down the days for it to go back, nice looking car but overall I really dislike it to drive, but mainly the lower rent feel. It's likely to be replaced with an A3 or 2 series.
It does feel cheap inside doesn't it, don't know if I'm spoiled by other marquees or whether AMG/Mercedes have missed a trick. My C63 went back last month and when looking for a replacement I had a good look at CLA45 and there were just too many negatives:

Plus that satnav/screen looks dreadful and like an afterthought, BMW always win in that regard (HD screens, big displays, etc.).

£53K?
Imagine the p/x price you'll be offered in 2-3yrs.
3 yrs.. hmm, i'd say 40% of basic list?Imagine the p/x price you'll be offered in 2-3yrs.
I guess this is the result of changes in buying preferences from outright purchase to cheap lease deals, resulting in 3 year old cars that relatively few people want when they can get (theoretically!) better value from buying a brand new car for £x per month.
Wonder where its all heading...

Interior seems, dare I say it, tacky compared to Audi and BMW.

Porsche Macan (in Turbo guise) costs even more...
Well thats a proper SUV. Bigger etc. The Macan is a Q5, this is really a Q3. So you would expect it to cost more. It would be the equivalent GLB if they made it.As said before this cars only rival surely is the RSQ3 with the 5 pot turbo. I bet you dont get much change out of 50k for one of those either. Edit from £46k....

Mercedes seem to be going through a transition with their prices and resulting finance products and I'm not sure what they are trying to achieve.
Worth noting that you can buy an Audi S3 that does the same 0-60 time as the GLA45, for mid-thirties....so where does the other £20k go for the Merc (Because having spent time with both, you're not getting much more with the Merc in any area)?

NO wonder the German auto makers are laughing all the way to the banks.
Are they, though? There are those in the industry that wonder what's going to happen when the overinflated final values attached to most German manufacturer lease deals stop being underwritten by the banks in London and Germany. If they do pull the plug, and they've been threatening to, there's going to be a rude awakening.Ali_T said:

Too many new cars are "sold" in the UK - the problem (if you like buying new cars) is that it destroys residual values, so slowing new registrations would be a good thing.Same happens to used values too - buy a car at 3yrs and it still loses a big % of its value over the next 3yrs.
The other thing that would help would be to switch the UK to LHD so opening up mainland Europe for used car sales. Used prices are way higher elsewhere.
I wouldn't mind driving one becuase of the comments made on the engine, but I am afraid that is the ONLY thing that appeals to me.
However if I had to chose an A45 it would be this one as the hatch and in particular the saloon versions look awful. The overhangs on the front and rear of the saloon, disgusting, reminds me old American cars strangely.
