My first thought of the e30 BMW esta... I mean Touring when I read the thread title.

I remember being really quite taken with them when they were launched. They were pretty desirable back then iirc.

I can't decide whether it edges the saloon or not though...

I always thought the E9x 3-series looked better as an estate than in its other forms.

Best:
Can't top that Alfa 159 I reckon, but honourable mentions for the Alpina estates and pretty much any of the Audi Avants. I particularly like this

Audi A6' the B7? My mate has a 53 plate RS 6 of the model I'm on about.

Hideous thing as a saloon.
Do you mean the C5? Hideous? Are you serious?

Clubman looks way better than the twee MINI it is based on.

Mk6 Golf had possibly the ugliest rear end of any modern estate car.

Was going to post a pic, but it's tea time and I don't want to ruin anyone's mealwink

You lot should've eaten by now (and I'm on a proper computer not a crappy smartphone!) - behold, the horror:

Oh, and I'm biased, but I reckon the current Toyota Auris looks better as an estate than as a hatch:

I know I will be shot down for this, namely because it's BL and not German but......

The 12" wheels they seem to have specified with them all doesn't help!

This was the first car that came to mind. Too much overhang on the rear.

The B5 S4 looked fantastic as a saloon:

But the Avant was rather ungainly and unnattractive - surprising how much the change to an estate spoiled the lines of the car!

Still, all great to drive, I hear.

I don't think it's the overhang Ricky. I love a bit of overhang as you can tell from some of my cars (rover Sterling) massive overhang at both ends and Jags big arse as standard.

Checked the posts with this in mind. If you hadn't posted it, I would have. Horrible looking things

I think the Jaguar X Type looks better as an estate.

It looks better as an estate because that hides the stubby boot of the saloon version. Doesn't help the front end though.

The Laguna II also made a better estate than hatch for the same reason.

Audi A3 estate is horrendous compared to the 3 door hatch. Why they based the RS3 on it when all the others are available as estates and none of the others are a 3 door hatch bewilders me.

Best small estate has to be
Biggest mistake I ever made was to sell it (any reason to post a photo).
