As I sit in the train station waiting for my train to take me to view a car today, I realised that upto now, i have never paid more than £5450 for a car, which was my last car (M5). The car that I am looking at today is £5800 which will be the most that I will have ever paid for a car.

I've always owned my cars and paid cash. In this current climate of leasing, pcp etcetera, I expect that outright ownership of car is dropping a lot.

So what's the most that you have paid in cash for your car? Lease, pcp etcetera isn't applicable to this question.

£15,000 for a Golf R32. Having said that in the process of deciding my next car which will be circa 30k which is quite scary for me compared to previous outlays, but want to treat myself to something this time after a rubbish year!

£14k for a Leon Cupra. Back in the days when I had spare cash, before houses and marriages swallowed all the money.

AU$31k, which was about GBP13k, for a new Forester back in 2007. Still got it, don't plan to sell it. Only brand new car I've ever bought with my own money.

12k for a Carrera 3.2
Other than that, 4.5k on an E39 530i
Most of my dozen or so cars have been less than 2k, though next year I think I'll be treating myself to an older XK8! I feel really decadent!

£45k for a 987 S back in 2005. I was young and single back then. Since then each car has got successively bigger and cheaper - I now have a £15k SMAX (and three kids, a gigantic mortgage, no disposable income etc etc). A familiar story!!

I'd be more interested to know how much the most expensive car you've bought was when new (and inflation adjusted)...however I'm sad like that hehe

£44k for a brand new Cayman in 2006. Kept it for 3 years then sold it for less than half, that hurt. What a 3 years though.

£76k (911 Turbo Cab). It was 16 months old and had already depreciated from £117k when new (I got the original purchase invoice) yikes

Kept it over 3 years (a long time for me and cars) and sold it for the deposit on a new house.

I bought a 911 Turbo in 2002.

It was an impulse purchase prompted by my wife leaving and cost £91,500.

18 months later i had to sell it as part of the divorce settlement.

Was a hell of a car though.

£2850 back in November 2010 for my Peugeot 406 Coupe. I still have it.

By the time November rolls round this year, the purchase price will equal just a smidge over £1.56 per day of ownership. Obviously that doesn't include fuel, servicing, break/fix, or upgrades.

£2000 for a 1996 mk 1 Seat Toledo tdi (the one based on the mk 2 jetta platform) back in the early 2000s

In 6 months it:
Needed a new exhaust-full system
went on fire-faulty engine loom
Was involved in a crash where a 406 ended up embedded in the drivers door

Suffice to say i now never spend more than a weeks wages on a car.

Although i could be convinced if I could get the money together for something tasty..
