Audi A2

Replaced with the heavier, unresolved design of the A1

Mercedes S-Class W126

Replaced with the heavier, bloated W140 S-class that sold about half as well

BMW E60 5 series

Replaced with the current 5

Of course design is subjective but every time I see these newer models (in the case of the W140 there appears to be more W126s on the road now) you often wonder what the design departments have been smoking silly

You say the F10 was a step back from the E60 was a step backwards, but many people would argue that the E60 was in itself a major step back from the E39, especially when comparing a F/L E39 to a pre-LCI E60.

I agree completely. However the E60 was a complete change from the E39 and well resolved in my eyes, so it still differentiated itself from the competition somewhat.

The last one might look nice, but it was otherwise everything a Benz shouldn't be.

From what I can remember most people thought the E39 was a fine looking car from day one, where as most people couldn't believe their eyes when the E60 appeared with it's Dame Edna headlights and weird bootlid. It looks acceptable today, but isn't as conventionally handsome as the E39 or the F10 (which does sit very well on the road in all versions I think).

Back on topic, the Impreza mentioned above is a good shout. Rally bred saloon to weird 1999 Seat Leon lookalike overnight.

It was, but when you consider that the last of the E39s had auto dim mirrors, dual zone climate control, and a well built interior, and E60 would have left people cold. Apart from an LCI E60. I actually really like them, and you are right, it does look resolved. It's certainly aged well!

except the A2 was an utter PoS and will go down in history as one of the all time financial failures in the auto industry where as people buy the A1 smile

The market is feckless and values style over substance, evidently.

Another Nissan - Primera P11 - excellent driving, BTCC winning. P12 odd looker, less fun to drive and not as reliable.

Think I disagree with all of these. Cars change, that's just how things are. How can improvements be a step backwards? I hate modern Merc's, they look like a failed attempt to be cool, but I'm sure they're probably more refined than their predecessors and in general that is a step forwards.

If it matters so much why not collect all these cars?

As I understand it, from a technical viewpoint, the EP3 was in some ways a bit better kitted than the proceeding FN2. SOmething about the type of suspension architecture each model had.
