My dad spent much of his working life as a petrol pump engineer, and I spent much of my school holiday time with him. Happy memories of map reading in the van from garage to garage fixing pumps. Some of it was at bigger sites, but a lot of it was smaller and sometimes really out of the way places. I guess I've been to more garages and seen inside more petrol pumps than most ! And being car obsessed from as far back as I can remember there was nothing better than getting to snoop round a garage while he fixed a pump.
Am I alone in hoping you’d recall how dad always had a fag on the go but never had a mishap...Did he work for Avery Hardoll (sic) or any pump on the forecourt?

He worked for Gilbarco, who have a long history of petrol pump manufacturing going right back to their first model in 1910.
Although his work was predominately at garages there's all sorts of places that had their own pumps - military installations, farms, haulage, boatyards, race circuits etc.
There were always some interesting places to visit - I remember going to a farm in the middle of nowhere who still had a 1920s Gilbert and Barker pump in the yard, Lotus cars pumps at their test track, RAF bases where you had to stop at the gatehouse to get a pass. All very exciting to a younger me !

Have i spoken to you about the fantastic investment opportunity i've recently been made aware of???
Combining funeral parlours with filling stations? The Pritchards of Llandrindod Wells are way ahead of you.I've thoroughly enjoyed this thread, and have one of the books on order.
Shortly after the thread started I went to Llandrindod Wells with the S2000 club, staying only a short walk from the Pritchards "Humer Unbeam" garage.
I love this sort of thing, please keep updating this excellent thread everyone, and keep the books coming - I'm looking forward to the Central Southern edition.

Spilsby in Lincolnshire. I like to see shops with petrol pumps, as opposed to petrol stations with shops.
That's a fine line there, Dicky.
No, no, no. A shop with petrol pumps is trying to provide an all-round service but a petrol station with a shop is very often just a catchpenny.
There will be correspondence.
I'm sure there will.
