I cant remember if Ive already posted any of the local ones...

https://picturestocktonarchive.com/2012/10/05/bill... - now a small bungalow on site as far as I remember. The building at right is now a micropub.

https://picturestocktonarchive.com/2012/09/24/impe... is now a generic filling station, none of the splendour of that old building (a bit before my time)

https://picturestocktonarchive.com/2015/09/14/bill... - now some sort of heavily re-faced offices.

I would love to add equivalent Streetview images but I cannot work my phone well enough...

Only just spotted this: REPAIR STATION. In the same vein as Filling Station presumably.

It's a wonder the building housing the expanded business didn't have a preservation order.

I’d guess the picture was taken some time in the fifties. The listing of buildings of special architectural or historical interest was established under the Town and Country Planning Acts of 1944 and 1947, and there wasn’t much of an appetite for listing buildings from the thirties when these measures were introduced.

Even over the course of this thread sites we've featured have gone. In search of better photos for the book, often the simplest way for Rich or me to see if a place was still standing was to drive there and look. It was quite an eye opener to see how many have been redeveloped, even some quite attractive buildings have just disappeared.

It’s quite sad really; so many nice buildings that are part of our social and architectural history have been lost, often needlessly it seems. However, in built-up areas traditional garage sites are prime targets for redevelopment as they can’t compete with the supermarket fuel offer and so become less financially viable, and without statutory protection (ie listing or a location in a conservation area) they disappear. That’s why it’s important that records of these old places are saved.

I’ve clocked up many miles to find not some beautiful but neglected old filling station rich in history, but a portakabin housing a suspicious Albanian with a jetwash lance with not the faintest idea of what once existed at that spot and a face that said “£5 for a rub with my scratchy sponge or fk off, mister”.

Some, however, have exceeded expectations. I am particularly fond of the abandoned Lada dealer in the East Midlands, framed by buddleia and leylandii, and flaking, padlocked old Murco pumps out front with that ‘cats bum’ logo. There’s a dusty Samara and a grubby salesman’s desk visible through the window.

Just a quick thank you to DickyC for adding to my half-arsed mobile post - greatly appreciated.

Happily I'm married to a woman who not only understands but also encourages us to go off the beaten track and find the old remains of roads and buildings, I will be showing her your post when she gets in later and no doubt the dog's going to be dragged out for a walk to go exploring biggrin

It was a pleasure! And thanks to you as I've sent off for a copy of the picture with the truck and the two blokes leaning.

This little gem turned up tonight.

Looks great at a first glance, this is the Midlands and North edition. It has a brief write up on featured petrol stations.

Absolutely all over! Nowhere on Scilly but I looked. Something like 75 sites in the South West edition of the book. Some beauties in with the horrors.
