Maybe next time we're coming back from Silverstone we should give it a go.

Yeah, saw that but we didn't stop there (no coffee). The Quatt place only stopped selling fuel a few years ago according to the staff, must have been running down for a goodly while.

I must have driven though Standerwick on the A36 to the south of Bath hundreds of times. Yesterday there were temporary traffic lights and I happened to notice this garage.

The brown sign above the door reads 'Stander Wick Garage'. A quick Google and I found this on Flickr (not my picture, credit to the original photograper etc)

Although I have travelled this way a lot and would be able to remember the late seventies, I don't recall it being there at all so no idea when it closed.

Hi

This is our house (on the left hand side). It was a Morris Garage in the 1920s/ 1930s - the building was originally built in the 1840's as a Stable and Coach House. Under our front drive way are the old petrol tanks still (you can see the breathers at the front by the stone wall). I am not quite sure when it stopped being a garage - but it has also been a car hire place. Our house was converted to a residential dwelling in the late 1960's.

Currently our next door neighbour still runs a second hand car sales business with their flat above the garages. Access to our property is through his access.

I found this rather delightful Bar/Tabac/Filling Station just outside Vézelay in central France. Although closed at the time of my visit, I think it is still operational. I love the idea of a little glass of red while Gaston faites le plein (despite being an ardent teetotaller).

Not a filling station (AFAIK, it may have been at one point) but I drove though a mid Cornwall village called Pensilva today (a detour on the way home from Plymouth due to crazy traffic) and saw this great old Renault dealership.

Bit of googling and it seems that it opened on in the 60’s and possibly ran until the late 90’s/early 00’s. Wish I had stopped for some better pictures!

I could go on a bit about the A36 towards Bath but won't. I'd like to know what the silver car is peeking out from behind the bus in the second pic. I think Simca but am happy to be corrected.

Had the family in the car and the wife and daughter wouldn't sanction a stop (although my son wanted to!) as lunch took precedence for them but I encountered this delightful place on holiday in Cardigan last week.

As mentioned above - did they take the petrol tanks out? This building is next to Trinity Church in West Street Fareham, and used to be a Ford Main dealership by the name of Croker and Farrell. 144 West Street is the address. My Dad sold it in 1959 and moved to Droxford and then the garage was torn down and a new shop built in its place. Now closed it seems, but I often wonder if they bothered to take the petrol tanks out and if not is it a ticking time bomb! The garage had the Esso pumps outside and cars stopped on the roadside to fill up, but as they caused a problem the council told my Dad the garage had to go.

It looks like the Talbot 1100 from the wheel trims, a Simca 1100 in all but name.
My dad had Simca/Talbot vans in his business as his old school friend was a Chrysler Talbot dealer (my first 'car' was one of dad's Simca 1100 vans, he gave it to me on the understanding that I didn't buy another motorbike after I rode my FS1E into a wall).

Here is one of a now long defunct garage/filling station - the Central Garage, Amlwch, Anglesey (Garage is still around but moved around the corner when a 'new' bypass came through'. The pictures have popped up on a local facebook thread.

First off, the garage in its earliest era, I am assuming something like the 20s or 30s(?!). My points of reference are limited here, but many flat caps in evidence. I cannot identify the make of bike...:

Next another older pic, late 40s or 50s(?) from the fashion/car:

Followed by a shot (colour!) from sometime possibly early/mid 70s (based on comments on FB):

Next, a couple of the garage and the characters working there, not long prior to demolition, from I am guessing the mid/late 70s based on the 51 1/2p price for petrol, (5*, which itself was apparently dropped by Shell in Mar 1978...):

And a shot that was labelled as the last days of the garage as the demolition seems to be catching up with it. I don't have a date for this but the R-reg Austin/Morris and Avenger estate (and above) suggests late 70s:

Finally a picture showing how it looks now-ish. If you compare the below to the picture from the 40s/50s above, the shop with the awnings on the right is now Amlwch Windows, so that places the former location of the garage somewhere in the mouth of the junction opposite. The 'new' Central Garage can be seen on the left. Still a filling station, but now Total rather than Shell:

Progress.

Love that timeline of Anglesey. I still wonder how many people are alive who have never held an actual 6"x4" photo in their hands.

Here's one from my recent travels - https://goo.gl/maps/zZQp91fvQMDSfFnJ8 - Google is a bit out of date, it's now a florist. I'm struggling to find any information but it's The World's Most Obvious Former Filling Station, I'm sure of it.

I stopped randomly in this town to watch the participants of Tour Auto pass through.

and whilst waiting for something to occur ,thought might as well fill up at the garage opposite.

The proprietor told me ,using the universal language of drawing in the dirt on the window ,that it's been

around since 1930.

Inside you won't find a computer of any sort ,a British car stopped and bought a battery ,invoice was written out from a pad of paper.

He had to go outside to look at the display on the pump to see how much I had to pay.
