I quite like that and did have a look for a Thurlby estate version whilst looking for a new car a few years back but couldn't find one.

£7k+ for a 9 year old Astra though? Are they on something?

Regarding the price, must be a rarity factor?
Good luck to the seller.

Didn't that generation of Astra with the CDTi suffer from chocolate gearbox syndrome? And that was before it was remapped.

Yup the m32 was a chocolate box

Same llump in the vectra came with the f40 box cracking combo

Had the same lump mapped similarly in a vectra taxi was actually decent and a damn site cheaper than this smile

M32 aren't "chocolate" but do have issues mostly related to bearings getting too warm. Not the end of the world.

Its a £2.5- £3K car, no more. It doesnt get much worse, a really crap interior, ste engine, the worst design tailgate in history and of course the peasant Vauxhall badge. It will sell though,to a Baz the bellend from the local council estate..

As far as the 888 car goes, can't help but think if it was white and wore a four ring and s-line badge it'd be seen as a great car.
No, it would still be a stty diesel, just a more expensive one with nicer interior.

Maybe there's little love for this particular car... But we've only just begun to discover how diesel, or to be more accurate, turbo-diesels can be outstanding in sports / performance applications. Advances and innovations even just very recently.
Don't get me wrong - I don't think it is a bad car! I just think £7.25k for a 70,000 miler is stoopid money when you could find a non 888 version with fewer miles and get it mapped and still have change running into 4 figures. Better still get an Alfa 147 with the same engine for half the price.....
And on the subject of Alfa, I think the 156 was available in a diesel. IIRC an acquaintance had one. Smart little exec. And a nice alternative to the usual suspects.

Yep I've a 147 JTDm as my daily with a remap, 189 bhp and 290lbs/ft, goes very well and is a bit of a sleeper.

Good units the JTDm.

Was that fitted to the 1.3 CDTi as a six speed? Our old work fleet cars all have grumbling bearings in the gearboxes, but we've been told to just keep driving them anyway, and see what happens.

Imagine the torque steer...the Astra VXR is not IMHO a nice car to drive fast as it tries to pull you off the road if you boot it. The diesel will be as bad, if not worse.
Having owned a VXR with a stage 2 map I can confirm that you're talking bullocks to be honest. At no point did the car ever suffer from torque steer and mine was running over 100lb/ft more than the standard car as well as nearly 60bhp more power. It suffered no more than the EP3 Civic Type R I had before it.
It's always good to hear from someone who's driven/owned the car.
My son has a VXR. I have driven it. If you don't think a VXR has bad torque steer you don't know what torque steer is. My remapped Octavia is nothing like as bad.

Friend has a white 888 he's owned from almost new, currently has 17k on it. Drives surprisingly well, while giving good mpg. Could think of a whole lot worse daily drivers.

I'll pipe up. These are actually bloody good cars, I had one when I was 19 as I was doing a lot of miles and still wanted some performance.
My friend at the time had an EP3 type R and this would match it all day long, but return 45mpg on a run and 35mpg all day long flat out.

HOWEVER, the asking price is ridiculous!! It is an out of date Astra and is not worth anywhere near that 7k asking price!! If you want something similar, go and buy the SRI 1.9cdti 150hp and stick a DTUK tuning box on for half the price!
Whilst I had good experiences with mine, the extra power did have its effect on the drivetrain. I sold mine at 70k miles and well I wouldn't have wanted to be the next owner as all the big expensive consumables had had enough of 70k miles of torque at 33% increased power.

Decent little car, but I'd purchase something else.

'Diesel' and 'Astra'.

Just say it out loud. Sounds like a sports car, doesn't it? hehe

Actually to be fair I've driven one of these at the owner's insistence and for a bland shopping car it had some balls in a straight line. I'd just given him a pax ride in a 600BHP R32GTR and scared the bejesus out of him, so he thought I might be pleasantly surprised that an astra it wasn't as god awful as I might expect.

It wasn't too terrible. Nor remotely interesting.

What a bunch of childish wkers. "Astra Diesel Dog st Council Estate yadda yadda "

This is supposed to be a site for people who are interested in cars.

I guess most of the haters here didn't know about this car until they read about it here, but it's st because it's an old Vauxhall Astra.

Most mouthed slack jawed tossers aspiring to an Audi on lease as they gaze out onto the office carpark from the 2nd floor of Wernham-Hogg when they should be processing paper orders or whatever. Dull dull dull.

Maybe they are just kids?

I'd have thought at this early stage in the Easter hols most of the child posters would have been too busy wking themselves daft on free to view porn sites to bother posting here.

This is an interesting car. Not everyone's idea of a dream car! But I like stuff like this. Thurlby has BTCC heritage, but am I right in thinking its just a regular Vauxhall dealer? Not quite a garage special edition, but certainly an imaginative and fun way to make a run of the mill Astra a bit more interesting.

It is quite expensive. If i had the space, i'd have one as a bit of fun for a year or two. The appeal to me would be that the boorish four ring worshipers (Who would think AutoUnion was a German car workers association) would sneer from behind their premium plastic dashboards guffawing and pointing at the Chav from the council estate. With no clue at all.

Thanks for the well written, insightful review PH.

(I have nothing against Audis, I just used the brand as an example)

I don't understand the hate - this isn't just a boring Astra with a remap, it's got some serious brakes and suspension too. The press were very positive when it came out.

I drive 18k miles a year, I can't justify an extra £200 a month on fuel so I have to drive a diesel. But I'm bored of a big heavy saloon - I want something reasonably quick thats still fun to drive. Oh and I'm a bit poor so I'm not going to spend over £10k.

That leaves me with a choice of this, or a Megane 175 DCI. Personally I'd get the Megane (and very nearly did) because it's a lot cheaper - but this car certainly has a place.

Whatever it would look like, feel like, or be made of - it's still a vauxhall. Waste of time and money.

Can't understand the hate on here. I'm sure the Astra is quick enough for an economical family car which is not trying to be a pure sports car.

But I'd sooner spend £2-3k on a decent Fabia vRS or Ibiza FR TDI or VW Polo GTI with the VW 1.9TDI and spend a couple of grand more on remapping, FMIC, sorting the suspension and brakes to end up with something just as fast, with more Q-car appeal and better economy.
