Love these cars, I learned to drive in one, then had my own when I was 20. Sounded great, too. This is far too much though, it was for sale a couple of months ago by the original owner at £3995, I would have gone for it then if it was RHD. But at £9k, it would need to be RHD and delivery mileage, the dealer must have added an incredible mark-up on this!!

IIRC there was not 'boost' needle as such, it featured a turbine symbol which glowed red under acceleration?
It glowed green, my old man used to say if the light came on, it was lesson over when I was learning in my Mums GTti, the lesson never actually ended though....

Here's mine (blue) and my mum's (red) GTti's. And some other period hatches!

Nice, but not at that price! You could get a good E46 M3 for that!
That's all okay but there are 100"s of E46 bmw M3"s for sale and only a handful of these.
Brings back memories of the Renault 5 Turbo ,susuki swift GTi , Peugeot 205 gti ,etc

Great wee cars had a new one back in 89 in white. It cost over £9K when new......not now sadly, way over priced.

they were only 10 grand new!
I bought An 18 month old j plate back in the day, and loved it.
Compared to so many other hot hatches it was more than a match, punching well above its weight.
Recently I bought one and restored it but the magic has gone. I tried a Cuore Avanzato TR Xx too with was not as fun as I expected.
Best left as a memory.

Probably a better bet to get a grey import with the steering wheel on the right side or go for a Starlet. In fact, just get the Starletsmile
I agree, the Starlet is very underrated and quick little car.

For about 30,000 miles if you are lucky....
It's the same as a 280bhp turbocharged 2.0 engine. Or a 250bhp turbocharged 2.0 if compared to the 125bhp Ecoboost. Hardly racing engine-esque groundbreaking levels of specific output. I dare say the engine has been designed to be a tough little unit, but time will ultimately tell.
The bike mobs are knocking out a reliable 180bhp from one litre without turbo's so I doubt Ford's little motor is that stressed.

Hate to be a dick but it's worth mentioning the 1.0 Ecoboost now makes 140bhp in the Fiesta "Black" and "Red" editions. getmecoat
And yet the little Charade is faster! I suspect crashing the Fiesta might hurt a bit less though wink

Love these little things and it was one of these in the back of my mind that made me look at the Fiesta, they have similar character and even make a similar noise but the Charade was a fair bit noisier as you can imagine. One of the cars I wish I had a chance to drive, I was a regular passenger in one when my own car at the time was a 1.0 litre of the Nissan Micra variety so the Charade felt like a monster, even next to the MG Metro 1.3 another mate had at the time.

A bit before my time, but I remember longing for one of these. Naturally I settled for a Nova 1.2 Flair with some SR stuff glued on.

They were quite well known for being problematic as I recall.

I would love to have a go in one of these, and I don't think I've ever spotted one either. Reminds me of Honda's 1980s pocket rocket, the City Turbo.

My very first car was a 1991 vintage Charade. Not the GTti, but the 1.3 with 90 horsepower.
That car had a great drive train: engine and gearbox were absolutely lovely and paired with the low weight it made a fun package.
The chassis and brakes were all upgraded to GTti spec and more, but never really convinced. The EK hatch Civic was quite an upgrade when it came to handling and steering feel.
So fun little car, but not a true hero in my opinion! When choosing from the same era of Japan vintage I would choose a Civic EE9 (B16 VTEC) above this all day long.

Wanted one of these bad as a teen. I remember 'Revs,' magazine had a section that gave a brief review of just about every car the aspiring boy racer could ever want. For the Charade, it said

+Goes like a 911
-Lift off oversteer like an old 911

How the hell do I remember that?

I test drove one of these about 20 years ago and almost killed myself on a country road! The brakes were knackered.

My brother bought a new one when he was 18 in 1987. At the time my mother had a starion turbo and it was every bit as quick. Very reliable cool pocket rocket in its day

It is expensive... However it strikes me as being far more fun and interesting than some modern TDI heavyweight hatchback.

I'm on the lookout for a pocket rocket for my next car - Cheap to insure, low running costs, big smile factor. Swift Sport is at the top of my list.
