Weren't the engines semi-forged internally? So one could likely squeeze more power out of the engine with a some cheap mods and a turn-up of the boost.
I've always liked these, I eyed one up a few years ago, it was only a grand but needed serious cosmetic work, likely a bare shell respray.

We had one as a loan car in the garage I worked in , customers would look a bit disappointed when confronted with it but usually had a grin on their faces when they brought it back . Fun to drive , was written off by one of the idiot young mechanics who thought he was the next WRC champ but had the reactions of a sedated sloth.
My father purchased this particular Charade brand new, we went to the factory in Belgium to collect it. We sold it in 2003 for £3000 to a man in the UK, he then sold it for £4500 18 months ago, the new owner sold it four months ago for £4000, I know because I almost purchased it from the seller, to be honest I wish I had but at the time I didn't have £4k immediately available to me. At £9k there is no way I can buy her back.
The car is mint, my father looked after her incredibly well.

Don't know about the semi-forged internals but I know the big end bearings were a weak point, I done them once, then had to import a short block and it happened again. Mine got written off aswel by the next owner 
Gutted as I wanted to buy it back, I swapped it for a renault 19 16v exec and it wasnt any near as much fun, fair bit slower too up to a ton!!
£9k though....nah.
The most insane japanese pocket rocket of all time has to be the
Nissan Super March Turbo. (It even has the name for it!!!)
110 horsepower, 0.93 liter twincharged engine. 770kg
The supercharger gives 10 psi of boost up to about 4000 rpm, then the
turbo kicks in via a magnetic clutch, raising boost up to 14 psi with a
6500 rpm redline!
It also came with a car key that was a cat. A cat named after a sumo wrestler.

It's the same as a 280bhp turbocharged 2.0 engine. Or a 250bhp turbocharged 2.0 if compared to the 125bhp Ecoboost. Hardly racing engine-esque groundbreaking levels of specific output. I dare say the engine has been designed to be a tough little unit, but time will ultimately tell. Stuffing compressed air into small cylinders and making big explosions is a little different plus they are having to carry a lot more weight with a car body bolted over them.

A couple of years ago, there was a guy selling one in Eire. Never heard of anyone belore or since. Definately a lottery win car for me, just for the laugh i'd park it next to all the astons and bentleys.I had four of these back in the 90's. They shift. Of the other common hot hatches of the day I'd say only the Renault 5 GT Turbo and the Astra GTE 16v were significantly faster. In my time I had various drivers trying to pull away from me in Golfs, Escorts, Peugeots etc, they weren't as fast. I remember a trip from London to Scotland going up the A1 late at night. Guy in a Toyota Supra Turbo, the late 80's fat one, couldn't pull away unless we'd gone at insane speeds. Travelled in convoy for a good 50/60 miles and he gave me a big thumbs up when he left the motorway. Pre speed camera days and in my youth! Wouldn't dare do it now. The handling was alright certainly nothing brilliant. I'd have another if I had the space for a third car but not at that price even in right hand drive.
