It depends. Most of the time you are right, but if you just about get down in a Force 10 gale...
Agreed. If the pilot gets it down safely in the face of adversity, he/she deserves a round of applause.

Back on topic, I thought "dick" when the woman in a heavily battle-scarred Renault Scenic pulled out on me without looking. She eventually saw me, and slammed on the anchors. At which point, she looked at me like her lack of attention was MY fault.

Like I say, "dick".

PS: Is it wrong that the second thing I thought after "that was a lucky escape" was "I'll stick this on PH later"? biggrin

there hasn't been a plane yet that hasn't made it down

Russians certainly do this in my experience.
It makes you wonder what they have experienced in the past if a landing rates this much appreciation hehe
I suspect that they do it because up until very recently Russian airlines used domestic manufacturers for their planes which had rather dodgy safety records, I think some soviet era planes were still in use aswell.

They all use Airbus / Boeing planes nowadays and miraculously their safety records have dramatically increased!

The driver of the number 6 bus yesterday. Was pulled into a bus stop with his left indicator on when I pulled out to overtake him. He instantly switches the right indicator on and moves off with me on the opposite side of the road then proceeds to give me the coffee beans for overtaking.
Have experienced similar.

Pulling up alongside a bus that was stopped and indicating left. I get halfway along the length of the bus and he whacks his right indicator on and starts to move. I continued past him and get a blast from the horn!!

I appreciate they have right of way to move off but indicating and moving at the same time, let alone when a passing vehicle has no option to continue passing or stops on the wrong side of the road is just them being a knob!
The other favourite of bus drivers is to pull up at a stop and immediately whack the right indicator on, thus keeping everyone behind them. I've seen it done as passengers are still alighting, never mind getting on. wkers

This is the view when you pull out of my kids' nursery and look right

There's often a continuous stream of traffic going right to left (Flitwick station is 100m to the left) so it can be difficult to get out.
It can be especially difficult and very frustrating when you see the lights change at the pedestrian crossing and cars continue to come through amber and even red (do people treat pedestrian crossings with even more disdain than junction traffic lights?)

A couple of times I've forced my way out in an effort to slow down these people. Does that make me a knob?
Frankly I don't care.

I grew up around those parts and moved away 3 years ago. The difference in driving 'attitude' is remarkable when I go back. Much more aggressive.

When you're approaching a gap that is too narrow for two vehicles going in opposite directions to get through together, and the driver ahead of you has instantly recognised the situation, and has politely moved to the left, after presumably flashing the vehicle coming toward him.
You are intelligent enough to take all this in, and slow to a halt behind the polite guy ahead of you.
As the vehicle coming in the opposite direction starts pulling gratefully into the gap, the knob behind you, too dumb to see what is obvious, overtakes you, sees the vehicle heading toward him, and stops parallel to the guy who'd pulled over ahead of you.
By the time it filters through to brain-damage that he has screwed up, a bus or an articulated truck has followed him into the non existent gap, and now the mother of all Mexican stand-offs begins.

I have had this happen to me when I have been the "polite guy". I could not quite believe the level of dribbling, slack-jawed retardness it must have taken on the part of the driver who overtook.

I suffered the exact same thing the other week. I was "polite guy" and the woman who overtook me had the temerity to eyeball me as she went past. She was level with the end of my bonnet when it dawned on her what was going on. Bless her, she stopped and reversed back past me, this time without looking at me. The chap I was letting through was laughing away and gave me a very over the top thank you wave as he went past. hehe

Stop me if I've made this comment before, but you're a knob if you pilot your rather lovely Rolls Royce Wraith in out around and through the traffic on Sheikh Zayed Road like it's a Land Cruiser on Sharjah plates 2 minutes before Ifhtar.
Swindon?
Indeed, if you pilot your RR through Swindon at all

Approaching a car coming the other way down a suburban street - there's a gap in the parked cars up ahead on my side and I'm going to pull in to let the approaching car past.

But approaching car has sped up or at least maintained his pace so that he has to theatrically brake to allow me to pull in to the gap. All he had to do was ease off slightly and everything would have been fine.

Clearly trying to make the point that I should have pulled in to a gap about 200yds further back and waited.

Point not taken.

Something in the water... happened to me last week too.

Sadly I didn't get any sort of victory, the absolute melt who overtook me ended up bullying his way past the oncoming car by forcing him to reverse for about 50m.

Similar happened to me, was going past parked cars that went past a bend(so couldn't see what was coming), there's an oncoming car coming the other way as I've gone past the bend, I see a large gap I can pull into, but car floors it towards me, I put my left indicator on to show where I plan to go and point to the gap, we meet as I'm pulling into the gap, but he's going bloody fast now, and swerves left, properly smacking the kerb with a loud bang. It may be worth noting he had a dashcam in his window, I don't seem to be on YouTube though.

London Road has a semi-permanent traffic jam; Canon's Corner is a terrible roundabout due to (a) sheer amount of traffic, (b) people in the wrong lane, (c) petrol station exit and McD's entrance right next to the roundabout exit, and (d) set of traffic lights outside McD's; the A5 is a soul-destroying experience.
