1368kg!!!
Is it constructed from iron ore? The 208 gti is over 200kgs lighter. Hell the focus st is only a few kgs heavier!
I'll pass thanks.
It's because the lifetime Vauxhall warranty now lasts an actual lifetime, so it's made of 1/2" steel. Vauxhall got inspiration from old masters of durable high volume construction, like the T34 tank. Is it constructed from iron ore? The 208 gti is over 200kgs lighter. Hell the focus st is only a few kgs heavier!

To be fair to Vauxhall that probably includes a driver and fluids. That adds at least 75kg, and I think it has 215 or 225 tyres as standard. I know that won't hide a big weight difference, but competitors seem to use 205 tyres.

No wonder the CO2 is so high if it weighs so much. Maybe not today, but there's gonna be some serious changing of the VED bands and that will look very unattractive.
Also it's an older engine design with lower compression compared to rivals, and it seems to be geared a little bit shorter than rivals. That will hide some of the weight difference, and it probably gives it slightly better acceleration.Edited by court on Thursday 16th April 17:50

May be to reduce the amount of punishment inflicted on the drivetrain? I believe it's only available in 3rd gear upwards so would mean if you're abusing it in countless traffic light grand prix's, then you're putting less stress through the gearbox, clutch, etc and only getting full power when you're well and truly already up to speed.
That sounds right to me. I think overboost is managed to protect the turbo from overheating by spending a long time at full boost, especially at high rpms. Also it protects the diff/gearbox/CV joints from stress from wheel spin and higher output torque in the lower gears. It also increases perceived traction in the lower gears. Every turbo car has 'overboost', but with modern ECUs they can engage/disengage it when relevant inputs to the ECU are/are not met.Edited by iloveboost on Friday 17th April 16:31

Morning everyone. Unfortunately, there was a mix up with the Corsa VXR's weight figures, so the car's kerb weight is actually 1278kg, not the heavier gross figure mistakenly used. Apologies for this and I can only say I went with the information provided at the time.
As for Knockhill running in both directions, it's because the circuit is the only one with the run-off and barriers in place to meet safety regulations in each direction. Running in reverse makes it a very different track, as you can imagine.
Again, sorry for the confusion with the weight figures.
Ouch, I bet your name has been ticked off Vauxhalls crimbo list for that one?As for Knockhill running in both directions, it's because the circuit is the only one with the run-off and barriers in place to meet safety regulations in each direction. So now a whole thread moaning about the cars weight is wasted I guess all that's left is for the PH masses to go back to moaning about the badge...

Sounds about right. - It would've been interesting to read the comments had this been presented (Photoshopped badges) as a new Ford / Seat etc.AgentC said:
Autocar weighed a standard ST2 at 1200kg without a driver and full fuel tank.
Auto motor und sport weighed a corsa OPC ring edition at 1252kg, fully fueled, no driver. So there's about 50kg in it. All cars of the same construction style and size weigh about the same. It's not rocket science.

Having another look at this and I see Autocar still list the weight as 1368kg. Most interesting is Car Magazine. They list the weight in more detail.... 1293kg (wet, no driver) I take that as full of fuel and fluids.
So therefore, IMO..1368kg= EU weight (1293kg+68kg+7kg). Not sure what alisdairsuttie means when he says gross weight. No way would the gross vehicle weight would be just 90kg above the (1278kg) kerb weight!?!

That seems about right because the dry weight I've read for that car is 1232kg. This updated Corsa seems to have put on more than an additional 50kg if the 1278kg being quoted is dry weight. That makes it almost 100kg heavier than the ST like-for-like, which is quite a big difference for such similar size/spec cars. All cars of the same construction style and size weigh about the same. It's not rocket science.

It weighs more than our mk2 Octavia VRS.
I know there's probably a bit of poetic license involved there but I had to have a look to see what the Octavia weighed. Even at the inflated weight mentioned of 1368kg ( which may well be incorrect for the Corsa ) it would still be a person lighter than the vRS test car Autocar weighed (1430kg )Smaller alloys would maybe knock 10-20kg off that

Autocar's test VXR, back in 07, was 1255kg. Looking at the weight of stuff like the Renaults, Alfa Mito and Minis it doesn't seem so bad - probably why performance is similar to themAll cars of the same construction style and size weigh about the same. It's not rocket science.
Afternoon all. A final update on the weight issue with the Corsa VXR. I've checked with the press office and cross referenced this with other press material and the official weight figure is 1293kg.
Very sorry for any confusion and can only explain that we went with the info given to us at the time.

Still sounds quite heavy. For comparison a larger 3 door Seat Leon FR 1.8 Petrol is 1297kg and that includes 75kg for a driver. Very sorry for any confusion and can only explain that we went with the info given to us at the time.

Seat suggest 1285kg for the SC 2.0 TDI FR whereas the one Autocar weighed was 1350kg WITHOUT driver
They also mentioned 1375kg for the Supra SC 280 - Autocar test weight 1400kg WITHOUT driver.
If the Corsa is around 1290kg I wouldn't have said it was particularly heavy - the similar size Clio 197 of old was 1275kg and a 1.4 Alfa Mito Cloverleaf is 1265kg

I think all the manufacturers have problems deciding what they're actually weighing

On the weight thing, I'll wait till Autocar test one and see what weight they get on the MIRA weighbridge
Manufacturer supplied figures are notoriously inaccurate - you're never quite sure what's included....driver, passenger, fuel, luggage etc...
I hope it's as fun to drive as the old Nurburgring version though ( with the Performance Pack anyway )
So, Autocar weighed one and it came in at 1280kg with the optional 18" wheels on - so actually only 25kg more than the old one at 1255kg.Manufacturer supplied figures are notoriously inaccurate - you're never quite sure what's included....driver, passenger, fuel, luggage etc...

It was slower straight line than the old car ( 18.3 to 100 as opposed to 16.8 ) despite ideal testtrack conditions but quicker than the Fiesta ST on the handling circuit.
I guess the fwd layout and torque overcomes the 'skinny' tyres easily on a standing start.....
