RE: McLaren 540C Coupe revealed
Discussion
Same engine as the Super series, nope, a number of different parts.
Same Tub, Nope, the they have redesigned that too
Oh and different suspension, they don't use the trick hydraulically linked suspension of the higher models, just a regular anti roll bar, with still the adaptive dampers.
As mentioned, no carbon ceramic brakes on this model.
Interiors are completely revised
Quite a bit different really
And whats so difficult to understand about the model ranges really? Sports (entry level (911 Carrera?!)) Super (Higher performance (Porsche 911 Turbo)) Ultimate (like ronseal that one.. Porsche have an ultimate model too!!), they give you the power (essential a S model for Porsche, or GTS etc.) and then body style... Coupe, spyder or long tail... Thought its pretty simple.

Other than that it's very much as the 570S, with an identical interior ...
Care to elaborate?Honestly, it is so naff releasing a car and the simply down-tuning it and selling it for less. Are there actually any physical engineering differences between this and the 570? Surely they could wipe the floor with the competition if they could sell the 570 for this price and just get rid of this daft creation?

It does amaze me that people say they can't remember the McLaren model line up, but will argue the difference of a 996 vs a 997, an E46 vs a E36, or how vile an X.90 is.
Surely that's going down the wrong road of thought ?996 vs 997 were new iterations of the same 'model'. Ditto E46 vs E36 afaik ?
At the risk of being flamed, I really don't understand the level of McLaren bashing going on over their model line up with the "same tub, same engine, same interior" refrain. They seem to be following a well trodden path: http://www.porsche.com/uk/models/911/

Nor me.Of course Porsche has a design ethos! They have been, as you noted, been building variations of this softly-rounded bubble since the '40s. So? How are our friends at Aston Martin, Land Rover, and Rolls-Royce doing these days? All well, I presume because they build what (most of) the public wishes to buy.
The one difference is there is still some of the German "form follows function" in the way their cars are styled. I can perfectly understand why McLaren styles its cars the way they do - family heritage plus saving on re-tooling for another chassis each time a new model comes out. They do have a bottom line to meet and for that they actually have to move cars?

Why is there always so much negativity on these pages when McLaren roll out another car?
I think it's wonderful that a fledgeling British company are taking on the established players with some extremely exciting cars.
This is true, but they ain't half ugly! Consistently ugly, I'll admit. If just one of them was as decent looking as the Esprit concept, I'd be a lot happier.I think it's wonderful that a fledgeling British company are taking on the established players with some extremely exciting cars.
