Saw three Golf R's in the works car park today, everywhere I go I see them, I can see why but it made me wonder whether or not anyone still buys the GTI, which does most of what the R does and isn't hugely slower.

However it isn't hugely cheaper to buy from what I can see and to lease there isn't anything in it, in fact the R is cheaper based on the limited research I just did.

Would have to be a decent chunk cheaper to not stretch to an R I guess ?

A lot of angry folk on the R Forums about the lease deals. In two years, the bottom is going to fall out of the Golf R second hand market as they flood the market. The GTI might actually be worth more!

As above and the R has become what the Mk5 GTI was

Tis' a pity, this.

The MK7 GTI is a peach, I drove a manual performance pack one and it was really, very, truly good, better than I thought it would be by a mile, fast, comfy, reasonably spacious and the grip and the way it turned in and held a line while pressing in down a crappy road was ace - I'd go as far as to say that I'd have one over the R if I was in the market, it even looks better, which I know is an odd thing to say, all things considered.

A great car.

Why would they be angry, arent most leased ? do you mean the ones that bought them outright ?

I dont think anyone will be giving them away after a couple of years, it may mean there is a bit more choice but I bet they get snapped up, what makes them desirable to lease/buy new still holds true, there are a few about but not sure the market will be flooded, there are an awful lot of punters with 20 or so grand for a nice 2 year old Golf.

Can't you lease an R for something ridiculous like £250 a month?

Like M135i's, everywhere.

Whoever paid cash for a Golf R or the above, are in for a reaming come sell time...

I often think of the 3-series and A4 as the ubiquitous Cortina of the 21st Century...

Similar for Golf GTI/D, Aldi TDI/FTwhateverSI (FFS is also a model? confused ), mumble mumble flaming nuts - Escort XR3i anyone? nuts

Still, I'm not 'aspirational' - and clearly don't "get it" smile ; I can deal with that cloud9 .

Way more GTI's and GTD's round this area. I have only passed 3 other R's in 4k miles. Probably 40 or 50 GTD's and 10-15 GTI's.

Hardly see any GTIs around here, but loads of Rs. The R looks OK but I'd have to change the exhaust (WTF with 4 tailpipes); overall, the car looks quite bland. I saw a GTI for the first time today, and from the outside at least, it looked a fair bit better IMO. I could possibly see it being at least as desirable, maybe more so in the distant future.

I don't see that many R's to be honest, I past the same one on my commute each day and on average I see 2 a day whereas I see atleast 6 or 7 GTD's in one day. GTI's and R's are probably on par for me.

I wouldn't say I see loads of R's on the road and haven't seen an M135i on the road for a while. It's not like the last generation of hot hatches were you would see loads of ST's, VXR Astra's and Type R's.

In terms of the interesting Golfs that I see here in Essex, I'd say it goes GTD, then R, then GTI. I'd be interested to see the figures - I'd be stunned if there were fewer Mk7 Rs than GTIs in the UK. Both are lovely cars, but I'd have the R, if only for the AWD. And the fact they're less per month than the GTI.

Yup. Quite a few folk weren't even offered the cheap lease deal by their dealers either. When I was in the market, they didn't even mention it. Glad I didn't bother. At least with an Alfa, you know it'll depreciate, and the £6k+ off list price helps soften the blow!!! tongue out

I see loads of Rs and have only seen one GTI in the past few months. The GTI definitely looks better IMO. And less are being stolen...

I agree there are seem less new GTIs about. In the 'power war' on paper it loses out to the R as well as costing very similar to lease. It has been cursed with being outside the trends for either going diesel or having to have the top of the range quick(est) petrol. The 'warm' petrol offerings don't seem to sell as they did - for example there are also very few 125i around compared to 135i
