It always amazes me how McLaren is building some amazing road cars but at the same time their GT3 race cars are not exactly front runners in any major championships..
McLaren have suffered with the way that the BoP has been applied in the past. They won at Silverstone, but then the factory cars were taken out in the early laps at Paul Ricard.RamboLambo said:
Yet another awesome product from McLaren. As if the 650s wasn't awesome enough this is a 650S track focussed car on steroids.
Ferrari eat your heart out as McLaren continue to hit the bulseye with superior product again
I'm amazed at how much it moves on from the 650S Ferrari eat your heart out as McLaren continue to hit the bulseye with superior product again
Shame there is no roadster version

I can't get my head around that either, I'm guessing the weight "advantage" the road car has is negated in competition by ballast to bring them all up to similar weights?ex1 said:

The race cars are mechanically quite different from the road cars (engine/basic carbon tub apart) so there's no real reason why there should be any equivalence between the ability of the road cars and racing success. And then there's BOP and the amount of manufacturer backing etc.....Jeronh said:
I believe I read that he started a tech business when he was quite young and sold it..
Of course I could be wrong!
I think Tim touched on the money subject lightly in a video some time ago. Pretty sure he started a phone case business very young and sold that off (like you said), but most of the money he makes comes from running 3 (pretty sure it's 3) online businesses.Of course I could be wrong!
Back on topic ... I think the latest models they're pushing out are, from the front at least, looking too much like the P1. I would like to think the P1 looks would have been individual to the P1.

I liked my 12c but it was always missing that something that everyone talks about.
Which makes it different! When I sat in a 12c (launch 2011 something) it didn't feel as luxouriously special as a Ferrari or as crazy wild as a Lamborghini. The feel in the cabin and the looks made a GTish impression on me.
Yes, most buyers in this market will pick up a Ferrari. Maybe the Huracan is the lesser driver of the 3 but I'd choose it for its sheer wildness and the mad soundtrack. This 675 probably has the most roadability in terms of range: from docile to hardcore racing. Which would make it the most sensible choice.
But in this market / segment it's not about money or sensibility. One makes a choice from the heart. Porsche Turbo anyone?

While there are flashier and arguably better-looking rivals (Huracan, anyone?) Mclaren nurtures the idea that their designs are born purely of function not flash. Hence the question of relative aesthetic value is (somewhat) nullified for as long as the product stands up to the myth.
Just so happens their cars are starting to LOOK pretty good, too. Which, really, can't be a bad thing.
