Not so clever either (if they were) racing on roads like that.

Pure speculation.

Most likely on a sprinted drive with another vehicle, I very much doubt they were 'racing'.

Would be interested to hear what 'sports car' what they were driving though

the one which had the accident was a Seat, the other one a Porsche, according to the article linked just before.

One of the most spectacular routes on earth. You'd have to be a lunatic to try and drive on it quickly though, never mind race (if they were).

Grossglockner is amazing. We use it for our vehicle testing as it is just brutal when towing a trailer.

Looks from the door stickers the car was entered in this rally https://www.thegreatrally.com/
Seems like an everyman Gumball from site description

"You can enter with any car, van or motorcycle! Some decide to take their pride and joy, others buy rusty old bangers... You can even use your daily driver, the choice is yours!"

Grossglockner High Alpine Road, Austria.

This fantastic road takes you through the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park and to the Grossglockner itself, the highest mountain in Austria and the Eastern Alps.

It goes with reason that the Grossglockner High Alpine Road is something of a spectacle with it's fantastic road surface, 36 hairpin bends and unique surroundings.

As you drive through you will also have the chance to see the amazing Pasterze glacier, currently the largest in the Eastern Alps.
