Morgan AR P4 announced

Cosworth engine, adjustable dampers and £55K for 65th anniversary Plus 4

Between the hilarious 3-Wheeler and captivating Plus 8 variants, the four-cylinder, four-wheeled models in Morgan's range are occasionally overlooked. Now they're right back in the news with a limited edition to mark 65 years of the Plus 4.

Raffish racer, right?
Raffish racer, right?
The AR Plus 4 has been built by AR Motorsport, Morgan's racing chaps. To that end it features a 228hp Cosworth engine for "a more capable and exhilarating car on both road and track." As well as the new engine, the brakes have been upgraded (with nothing specific confirmed yet), there are new adjustable dampers now standard, a different axle ratio plus a "revised chassis." Again, there are no details on exactly what that revision comprises.

Cosmetic changes over a regular Plus 4 include untrimmed, exposed aluminium to hint at the lightweight focus, the new wheels and AR Motorsport logos. But don't think this is some track renegade special, despite being launched at the Silverstone Classic. Morgan claims there are "significant production changes" over a standard car including new soundproofing and through the body to improve NVH. The dash is updated and said to offer "improved usability for the driver."

Want one? Best be quick, as Morgan will only make 50. The price is £54,995, a fair bit more than the £38,335 for a standard Plus 4 two-seat Roadster. But then that has 156hp, isn't a limited edition, isn't built by the motorsport division and so on. Put it this way: do you think they'll go unsold?

Those LED headlights are vile, hopefully they aren't mandatory.

Hasn't this 2.0 litre been around for a while? It'd be great if Cosworth made a 4.0 ltr V8 from it...or is it, for the TVR perhaps? lets hope so.

I was lucky enough to have use of one for a couple of weeks (normal version) and they are an absolute hoot to drive! You can cover ground at a surprising rate of knots. Would love to be able to buy one of these.

Those lights ! Ditch them now ! Not totally sure a screaming 4 pot fits with Morgan character. I'd buy the V8.

I really like that, I even don't mind the LED lights.

I would love to have a go in one on track.

each to their own, but if I had 55k to splash out on a car personally i wouldn't be beating their door down for a test drive

Lovely, minus the LED headlamps and the demontweeks steering wheel.

When I get too fat for my Caterham (T minus 5, 4, 3...), I'll definitely consider a Morgan. Yes, for the money, there are faster, more accomplished cars available - but that's not the point. Lap times and magazine review scores matter so little in this era of congested roads and average speed cameras. For all that an M3/4, 991 or GTR would gladly take pride of place on most of our driveways, I'm pretty sure we'd actually find a Morgan Plus 8 Speedster would be more fun. Not better, per se. But more fun. It has a leather strap to hold the bonnet in place for gods sake.

p.s. Yes I'm (rapidly) approaching 40.

Think I'd rather have an AR BabyDoll.

Similar performance with a more classic look.

How to they get these dash switches through the SVA test (or whatever it's called these days)?

Are they using aluminium framing for the ali body yet? Or still in the last century with wood framing? Please give conventional lighting as an option, those led's are embarrassing. Frankly a supercharged new MX5 would be a far better option as road & occasional track day car.
