Why don't main dealers do MOTs?
Discussion
Well I'm sure some do but I've been to many that don't.
I had my car booked in with the local Porsche dealershp for a service and MOT, they told me the MOT would be done at Abduls budget tyres and exhausts down the road.
By chance I had to change Porsche dealer who like the first took it to a tiny garage called Stevies motors.
I'm paraphrasing in both cases, but it seems slightly odd that two large dealerships which deal with very expensive cars entrust the MOT side to tiny businesses.
I'm guessing its to do with cost/time?

Cost/time/numbers. To set up as an MoT you need a load of test gear, you need to keep it maintained and up to date. Each one takes 40 minutes, they won't let you do 2 an hour and entrust the boring stuff like tyres to the apprentice, because it's computerised. The price is fixed. Then you get into the repairs and for older cars it can be a right sod to sort out, with rusty suspension, leaky PAS, all sorts. The only way you make a living is by doing a lot and by getting a lot of the repair work.
Compare and contrast with a modern dealership doing mostly routine servicing on cars less than 3 years old. Oil, filters, the odd set of brake pads. £100 an hour, more in places. All you need is a lift and a set of spanners. Kerching.
So what are you choosing?

With a smaller volume manufacturer like porsche, may not be worth having a whole MOT setup.I had my car booked in with the local Porsche dealershp for a service and MOT, they told me the MOT would be done at Abduls budget tyres and exhausts down the road.

Simple costs maximum you can charge for a mot for a class 4 is £56 most charge £40 to stay competitive. Now when the labour rate for a small garage is similar mots makes sense as they do get a lot of work in from it. It makes sense to do it but a main dealer that charges £100 or more it just isn't worth it for them.

Don't know if it's changed but I was told by the local BMW dealers that if they do MOTs they have to do them for all makes and they don't want to.
Not sure what kind of loony would take their Fiesta to BMW dealers for an MOT, but presumably they could side-step that by offering crazy long lead times or something if they wanted.aka_kerrly said:

Also a conflict of interest MOTing your own cars for sale.
This is often a concern of mine when I see sketchy looking dealers that offer new MOTs on any car sold. Of course most main dealers do MOTs, they do it as part of their full service offering to customers and to generate income from the resultant repair work. Even the ones who don't have all the equipment on site are still keen to get hold of your car and sub out the test itself. MOT's generate profit beyond the test fee itself.

Exactly what I've always thought. The Merc dealer I use is only too happy to offer half-price MOTs.I've only come across a franchised dealer once not being able to do an MOT and was told it was because their tester had just left - no idea how typical it is to just have one?
