I have fond memories of going to Le Mans in one of those - great car.

I know this will get me in trouble in these parts (nothing new there) but the Pug was much more fun that the TVR 420 SEAC I'd been in the year before.

On the road to the Hotel de France at La Charte (of this thread http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... the Tiv (litrally) couldn't keep its exhausts off the ground and much more than 40 mph was a bit hair-raising. The Pug did 3 times that speed, as we caned the living daylights out of it on roads it might have been developed for. Really good fun. smile

Agreed... would sit quite comfortably in the 'single thing that makes you think knob' thread too.

As daft as they look now, I was young and it was at a time before plate recognition cameras were about. Even though there were far more police patrolling back then, not once was I pulled for them.

Had an E-reg standard 309 GTi about 25 years ago, loved that car. And you're right, road tests of the time said it handled better than the 205, more due to the wheelbase and a bit more weight at the back meaning it was less likely to spin out on you. I look for them in the classifieds now and then - still one of the best wheel designs ever, imho.
Agree with all of that. Had a standard 5 door GTi in about 93 and loved it. Still look at the ads for one occasionally....just in case....

Handled far better than my wife's 205 Gti, although I wish we had both still!

Would like this one:

Was a dream car for me when my daily driver was a 205 GLD. A hearty congratulations sir for restoring a peach of a car. The one thing the 205 GTi could have done with was a longer wheel base to resist the hedge entering antics of snap lift off oversteer so in many ways this was the superior car. Did drive a garage courtesy 1.1XE which was catastrophic. But this is the era when Peugeot's chassis chef was turning out Michelin Stars routinely.

I had a red door gti. It was one of the best cars that I have owned.
My best mate had a 1.9 205 gti and I preferred my 309.
If I could have another I would.

I have one of the few that are one the road. Hardly turned a wheel since November and passed its MOT last week with flying colours! I took it down the road to clean the brakes first - excellent fun on four wheels!

Keep meaning to sell it, but I change my mind after driving it!

Autocar had one at their annual 89 Handling Day Event

I didn't have a Goodwood, just the standard early 3-door

We saw this on the stand at goodwood and both commented on its minty freshness.

Certainly hugely more interesting than the moderns next to it I'm afraid.

Likewise, I saw the 309 sitting next to a 308 on the Peugeot stand at FOS. Makes you realise what a lumpy old turd the 308 is, styling-wise.

I have to smile at the irony there. The 309 was always seen as the ugly sister to the 205 in the day

Erm, Pistonheads mate. These are not the basis for boredom. Lot's more pics please and if not here then a pointer if they're stashed online somewhere?

Truly, first class restoration. I'm hoping you maintained a build diary, with comments and pics etc.

Perfect cuppa (or 3) and rich tea fodder!

My old 309 GTI! Who would have thought L19 PME survives!

Pity I never came to Goodwood to see the old girl!

I used to go to Goodwood Breakfast Club meets & chuckle to myself that it has a little Goodwood logo on the back!

When I had it I took it to Morecambe for LAD treatment.

It was pretty rapid after that.

I have had faster cars since but the throttle response was hard to beat from such a light car.

No way, small world eh?

I still have the invoice for the work you had done. Sadly the engine was in a state with cracked cylinders and snapped cam belt when I got it so it has a standard 1.9 engine now. The long term plan is to rebuild the original engine from what is left. Most if it was in the boot when I picked it up.

It is back on it's original Peugeot Coventry registration plate now too, L412 UAC.

I would love to see some pictures of it if you have any please?

I have some pics but will have to find & scan as pre-digital era.

I sent you a mail through Pistonheads if you answer that I will mail them.

I had the LAD work done as I had never had a car that used oil before so was lax on checking the dipstick..... until there was no oil on it. It then burned quite a bit of oil. So I needed a rebuild for £1k or a LAD rebuild for £1200.

I live on the south coast just along from Goodwood so I drove upto Morecambe one weekend & dropped it of & trained it back & did the repeat the following weekend. It was the best mistake I ever made! The only thing is the extra power gave it some understeer!

It was my first car with leather so I did quite a bit of leather conditioning which may have benefited you all these years later. It did not have the wooden knob or wheel on it when I had it I don't think it ever had one?

I also put a mongoose back box on it & had a few problems with immobilizers preventing it from starting.

I took it upto Scotland (my original home) & toured the highlands with my now wife.

I bought it low miles & looked after it in my time even though it was hard to sell. Not a big market for Green 309's in 2000. Pre-internet days of car selling.
