with the deliberate intention of gaining admiration from the general public,
Why would you think that?Because without an audience most people wouldn't bother with personal plates.

Most people have a personal plate for a bit of fun & don't give a flying feck what others think.
Some do, some don't. Most use private plates in the belief they complement their car. Some use them to disguise the age of the car. A great many use an expensive plate to add a (subjective) appeal to the car. These are vanity plates and a sign of narcissism. Some use a plate to inform members of the public - in case they couldn't already tell by the garishness of the car - what it is they're driving, ie plates with AMG,M5, V8. There are a tiny minority who do use plates for a personal reason - I'll concede..a tiny tiny minority.2 sMoKiN bArReLs said:
I think that statement says more about you than them
You've surmised I don't really like them? Your new career as a shrink beckons...2 sMoKiN bArReLs said:

I think that statement says more about you than them Its about making an impression, trying to impress but this whole thread is about those who try hard, but ultimately, in most cases fail, well at least fail to impress us who know the difference between a valuable plate and someone who has bought a cheaper one and then bent (or completely thrown away) the rules that govern number plates, the rules that make good plates expensive in a vain attempt to show off, on a budget.
I love the crap plates, it identifies the try hard showoffs, like normal plates do to a certain extent, only much worse, I can appreciate a good plate, they can enhance, but most of these on this thread just look desperate.
There is a lot of psychology around private plates I dont profess to understand, definitely seems to be favored by certain types of people, its extrovert behavior, this is telling, a private plate ion a car and you are six times more likely to get a speeding ticket,

I find the whole thing really interesting, am not against private plates and there are worse things in the world than someone turning two ones into a letter U, I think we British have a sense of fair play and dont like others breaking the rules we adhere to.

Yes. Engine running, on the phone=illegalAfter 5 minutes of waiting I felt it fine, I'm pretty sure an officer would apply the NDM and use common sense. Possibly the 'gardener' in the white tipper truck behind me yabbering away on his phone might have garnered more attention anyhow.
Edit to include a more obvious smiley in case people think I'm being arsey.

ALF JX on a VW Golf. Sadly no pics as I was driving.
Now, if you're wondering how that's possible, imagine A7 FJX with the top of the seven barely printed, what's left then "capped" to hide it and then a further 2 coloured caps used at the bottom of the 7 to bodge it into an "L"
A quick Cazana check says suggest it took "A7F (sorry Alf) 2 years to realise the plates were one of the (many) reasons the car kept failing the MOT
