Lovely old car with a lovely interior.
Manual must be unusual as well.

Even by the normal poor ad standards of the average seller, that's a poor ad. Headlights, spoiler, colour and leaper aside, that could be a decent buy.

Thanks to all for the nice comments ref the V70 purchase. It strays just outside thread budget even post-haggle, but gets a service, belts and tensioners, MOT and valet, along with some minor cosmetic work, so I can't collect until that's done.
All in all, it'll be quite a change from the venerable Merc (although I am still left with 2 more) but Madame deG is happy and I was impressed with the performance. I recognise that corners might not be its forte, but my goodness it shifts. The dog just won't understand why it finds itself pressed against the rear window when making progress.
I know this makes me sound a bit mumsnet, but I also really like the colour, and keen though I am on big-engined Mercs, I baulked a bit at some of the bills that some owners experience, so hopefully a return to Sweden's finest might make some financial sense as well as helping me get to know the attractive girl on the tills at the local petrol station. Daft VED charges still grate though, and I suspect I'll be buying more black rubber (fnaar) than I've needed in the past.

Having recently gone back to big Volvos via Mercedes and BMW I'm not disappointed with my V70 in the slightest.
The turning circle is akin to a supertanker and fuel economy not far behind, but genuinely it is a superb family car and can turn it's hand well to anything asked of it. Enjoy!

A good non MB option, no V8 though All in all, it'll be quite a change from the venerable Merc (although I am still left with 2 more) but Madame deG is happy and I was impressed with the performance. The Volvo looks great in that colour and definitely a proper barge. Top choice.

I do like a poverty-spec motor.

Quite a nice looking thing, that. I expect it would give you 40mpg, maybe better?http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Left-Hand-Drive-Mercedes...

The wireless looks nice. I think it's a Blaupunkt. Can anyone identify it more precisely?
The Volvo is ace, nice one. Very grown-up. Check the engine top mount - these wear badly and let the engine jump around the bay. Easy replacement.
Also, don't keep spare change in the cubby by the handbrake. This can cause a sensor in the centre console to give spurious positive readings and set off the alarm. Much fun and games to be had with that before reading somewhere what it was!
