Sorry to hear this OA, sounds like one of the position sensors/switches? You may have to resort to the manual method until your man can have a look.
Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
Thanks blueb10 and welcome to the thread. At least the roof is in the closed position and it's raining so I don't want it down!

I think I may have to resort to my "fix" from the last time - thrash the nuts off it for 50 miles and see what happens!

OK. Help required over the next few months please gentlemen.

My 'Bangernomics' Avensis is quietly going about its duties, but at 17 years old is starting to get towards 'end of life' status. It's been utterly utterly fantastic at being a car, needing basically nothing in 2.5 years and 73,000 miles. However, the jobs are building up and I'm not sure I like it enough to start throwing money at it. I feel a bit sorry for the old girl, but I'm just being honest!

I've got the 190e for high days and holidays, but it's not suitable for daily duties owing to the fact that I find hopping in and out a bit of a PITA. (17st/6'1)

SO... in order.

1. Comfort. I'll probably do 25-30k a year in it.
2. Prestige. I'd like a car I can be proud of.
3. Fixable. The idea of removing a front bumper to change a bulb, or shelling out £2k for a headlamp leaves me cold.
4. MPG. Avensis does 38/39 on a 2.0 petrol, so I think I'd have to see this sort of figure on a run.

Budget is, precisely, £1-5k.

I do like the W211 saloons, but what else ought I be looking towards?

I'll be watching the thread as ever, but just in case I miss something...

Exactly. With that mileage requirement, expected MPG and budget I would be actively avoiding barges.

This perhaps?

I have one almost exactly like it and have been driving it as my daily driver for over 2 years now and have been very happy with it.

And...believe it or not...if driven gently at 70 mph-ish on the motorway (and given that you do 25-30K miles/year I suspect you do a lot of motorway driving?)...will actually fulfil your mpg requirements of 38-39 mpg!

It's well within your budget too!

I remember you being very sceptical about the mpg figures I used to claim for the 728i I used to have. They really are quite economical of driven sensibly. They aren't too clever around town but on the motorway they're surprisingly efficient.

I miss my old E38 whenever I see a Titan Silver with the 18" M-Parrallels frown

Probably the rose tints, but it's surely the most complete car ever made? The 640d is amazing, but it doesn't make me smile like the E38 used to. Unless that's just an age thing, it felt pretty cool smoking around in a 740i at 25. I also really miss the tiptronic gear lever, it was such a good hand rest!

Agggggghhhh! The r129 has decided that the roof isn't going down, but that it's halfway down - so is beeping continuously unless I hold the button down. Turning it off and on hasn't made a difference. Annoying... Any help is welcome!
Could be a microswitch not working, hydraulics or ECU.

I had a similar issue, when I had to move the car while the roof was folding. The rear cover was still up, with the roof halfway back, and got the beeping and flashing switch. I manually closed the roof cover and then tried it, and it worked normally.

The Hydraulic pump might be not producing enough pressure, a leak perhaps (but you would notice that) or the ECU has decided to commit suicide, as the relays do wear out in it, mine got stuck a few time, halfway up opening and closing, just before the ECU committed Seppuku.

You might need to reset the fault code with a STAR system and try and diagnose it from there. To get the roof locked in the up position is much easier on the pre 97 cars, it is a struggle to do it on the later cars, takes two people to get it to latch properly.

I always, always liked the E38 7 series.

Check that.

Big miles, Big previous owners. Unsure the leather matches the car.

Otherwise, noice.

I like the leather. But that car is such a mishmash. Quad exhausts? Looks like it has the Comms pack but it's got an older style phone than my W reg had. Sports wheels but no M steering wheel? It does look incredibly well cared for, though.

I was indeed! It really doesn't seem possible for such a big car but that M52TUB28 engine plus the gearing really do make it easy to achieve.

On more mixed driving which is my daily commute of about 11 miles on mixed 'fast' A-roads from cold I have an overall average of 27 mpg. So, that's not vastly different to a 740i which would probably be more like 23 mpg under similar circumstances.

But for doing longer distance work, I find it hard to think of a car that meets the BorniteIdentity's criteria more closely.

Mora metallic is very nice, but there is no way that car came with that interiour from the factory surely? Mismatch galore. Seems the light coloured inlays in the doors do not match the top of the dash, which has stitching on it, that in turn signals 750 which had that as standard. Previous owner probably exchanged the dash at some point.

Vin search leaves this very un-helpful information. Colour SONDERLACKIERUNG (490) Upholstery SONDERPOLSTERUNG (Z1XX)

What to do with my 300E-24?

Lowtimer said:
What are the faults? If not irredeemable I'd be keeping it, having got so far. Lease cars come, lease cars go...

If you must sell it, get the work done properly and sell it for proper money, assuming it is all tidy and the rest of the mechanicals are good. Service and MOT stuff at the very minimum otherwise you will get peanuts.

Thanks for the thoughts. I'll get the MOT/Service and struts done prior to advertising. It and my Forester do have to go, though.

Faults? The usual wheel arches, wings, engine oil weep, cruise control not working, brake discs. On the upside, it has working air con, heated seats, sunroof, windows, new battery, part exhaust, plugs, leads, dizzy cap, all fuses and relays Contralubed etc etc. Plus a load of other smaller fettlings. It's never going to make proper money as its been used as a daily for nearly three years, but it would make a great running resto for someone who didn't have to depend I it being on the road all the time.

I must say that I do get the W124 thing. It's a great steer, is a nice place to sit and can be hustled in a way that belies its image. I'd never rule out getting another, but that's a little while off yet. smile

The interior colour choices are a wee bit too individual perhaps, but the body colour is fantastic. Great looking car.

I am the current barge King of the naff exhaust, but 4 exhausts on a 728 are too much of me. Why go individual on a 728 rather than a 740 as well?!
