This "shauffeur-owned" S500 is back, no bids at £2,500. As the vendor has been messed around twice I'm guessing he'd take a very cheeky offer...

Oh dear, I'm not thanking you for posting that! Only last Friday I was torn on whether to bid or not. This barge game really is like an illness! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2004-MERCEDES-S500-7-spe...

Try to find one.
This is something I hoped BMW would never do. But they have gone and done it. Try to find one.
Any way you cut it, The S63/S65 have this market segment all sewn up.
Keenly waiting for the W221 S63's to depreciate into thread levels.
Its been almost 10 years since they went on sale hasnt it?
How much longer?

Not a true car nut until you've owned a dull looking Mercedes saloon?
Regardless of what's under the bonnet I beg to differ.
V12 AMG is talking about owning a traders policy as opposed to a car. Regardless of what's under the bonnet I beg to differ.

Super shiney finish on a superb car but this photo (above) illustrates a feature that really irritates me about MB cars (or their dealers). Why do they insist on fixing the rear number plate with four screws?Riley Blue said:

Surely that is a vehicle well and truly in the spirit of this thread - a huge, comfy limo with a ridiculous engine?
The W140 600s we've been fawning over on previous pages are no different in spirit to that machine.

It was a shame when AMG did it, but they were always a bit 'straight-line hero'.
M was always supposed to be sharp.

Do you have a restoration thread for this? - If so, please post a link, I would like t see it.
I don't have a thread as such (it's been done so well before by r129sl that I didn't deem it necessary), but I've got some before/during/after pics here:http://s724.photobucket.com/user/harjeshkular/libr...

For me at least, the disappointing bit is that ///M is now deemed right for a 2.2 ton LWB limousine with reclining seats and Maccy's tables.

I get what you're saying, but with a quick de-badge, and putting the suspension into the waftiest setting, surely it just becomes a hugely fast barge? It was a shame when AMG did it, but they were always a bit 'straight-line hero'.

If it's the only 760i version they're going to offer, I'll take it. But if there are going to be other petrol versions, perhaps they will be better?

I was hugely excited - I had the money saved for it and decided to buy it. Then the problems began! My late dad utterly forbid me to have the car and also forbid anyone to help me by going down to down and get it (I couldn't drive - I had not passed my 'test) - and we had a huge argument during which he explained I would never be able to buy it. He had a great strength of personality, so that was the end of it. I suspect he thought that if I had something I liked it would sap my motivation. Sadly he had that backwards.
One thing he was right about is I will never own one - they became expensive and I can't afford one now! I do wonder what happened to that car though.
Sounds like your dad wasn't a car enthusiast , neither was mine , he managed to make 2 Volvo (slow)estates and a Subaru Forester ( much better but his first words when he overtook something were this is too fast) last from 1976 to when he gave up driving in 2013.One thing he was right about is I will never own one - they became expensive and I can't afford one now! I do wonder what happened to that car though.
He'd have done exactly the same as your dad, killed a dream if it involved a car
A few years ago he gave me £5000 so I went out and spent it on a XK8 , he went nuts but I was 47 then so he couldn't stop me , the pleasure that car gave me was immense
Next week I'm picking up a Maserati bought with the lump sum from my pension thanks to the government changing the rules for 55 year olds.
I'm fairly certain he'll go to his grave not knowing I've bought it because he lives 200 miles away and I couldn't stand the look of disappointment on his face
Luckily that's a gene I didn't inherit
I hope I don't go the same way as my father but fear I might due to the cost of childcare!
I do understand his position, even if I still don't agree with it. He thought that if I had a huge great lump of Buick to tinker with I wouldn't do any studying, but life doesn't really work like that! So he did have my interests at heart.
My interest in American cars was probably fostered by one of my grandfathers - who owned a number of them over the years.
His favourite one was a factory right hand drive Buick Roadmaster he bought new in 1948, replacing a Cadillac. They were a rare enough sight on the roads that during his first drive home after collecting it, he was stopped by a policeman who just wanted to look at it! H said the straight eight engine was completely silent at tickover and almost impossible to stall. Single figure mpg though.
