Eight years ago I bought a six month old 4500 mile Mercedes S65 with an invoice at new of £177k for £105k.. Still got it at 75,000 miles now worth about £25k. Depreciated approx £70k in first six months then a further £70k in next seven and a half years!! Bargain!!
How was it optioned up to that much!!!My Q7 was just over £80k and i paid half that at three years old and with just 16k on the clock.
The original owner of my Jag XJ paid £51k for it, I bought it from him at seven years old for £6750 with a full and very expensive Jag history, he even bought his tyres from the main dealer. I have the HP agreement - £48k over three years, the repayments were £1483 per month! Eye watering stuff. He also went to town on the options including spending £2.5k on the rear entertainment system which never got used as he didn't know how to work it. As you do...

I worked with a lad that did something similar. If he'd had any kids I'm sure it would have been very useful...HonestIago said:
The first owner had it brand spanking new, under warranty and with the peace of mind that brings. You had the car after it'd been subjected to 5 years of his flatulence, nose pickings and whatever else. You also probably don't have the same peace of mind associated with running a newer car. Some people care about these things and others don't.
I now fully understand why people choose a brand new Corsa over a 15 year old M5 despite being incredulous at the idea when I was a bit younger! Reason - I naively bought a c.£25k (in 2000) Impreza Turbo for £1900 in 2012 and then learned all about the running costs and hassle of older slightly interesting cars! Won't stop me buying another (better) Impreza though!
Tbf you bought a £1900 impreza turbo. It was never ever going to end well. You'll soon feel the pain and realise why they are cheaper seconds hand. Ours cost us £6k in 10 months to run. Injectors, inlet manifolds, sat nav all packed up. Miserable pieces of st. Couldn't wait to get rid. But new and under warranty I wouldn't of been as upset. Surprised but not upset.
Big car money big money repair costs.

To illustrate how it works here in Germany: The car I drive at the moment cost €35640 in 2012. I bought it in 2013 with 12300KM on the clock for €21500. That's a loss of over 14000 in the first year
Volkswagens loss, my gain
I'd never buy a brand new car here, but the one year old examples with low mileage ( what they call a Jahreswagen here ) are really very good value for money as the first owner has taken the wacking with depreciation, leaving the second owner with a bargain. What's not to like?
Edited for fat fingers...
