For all those banging on about the 'fake' engine noise in the M4/M3, have a read of this http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=...
It's apparently 2-3% electronic, the rest of it is picked up and amplified, go and test drive one, find a tunnel with the windows down and you will hear it !
That's not what the article said! It's all fake. It's sound produced by the computer to mimic the engine and exhaust sounds that would be generated under the throttle and load conditions. Still fake. Just sophisticatedly fake. It's apparently 2-3% electronic, the rest of it is picked up and amplified, go and test drive one, find a tunnel with the windows down and you will hear it !
The conclusion I get from this review is basically, for real world use, both of these cars are awful. Now I'm saying that thinking that, given we don't have really wide smooth lanes, high speedlimits and basically enough room to enjoy these cars as you would say a 90's or earlier noughties performance car, what is the appeal precisely? It seems to me that you would be better off chucking the trick bits into a C class or 3 series that had say, 250-300 hp. That way you would have a comfy, luxurious saloon for general commuting but when the red mist descends you can still chase redlines and dive into corners enthusiastically, without always feeling like you are holding the car back which seems to be the case here.

I don't think you mean red mist. Hopefully not I've driven both cars - M3 and C63S saloon and I'm also a previous owner of a C63 Coupe.
For me the differences are simple and overall both cars are flawed:
C63:
For - epic noise, power, engine and sense of occasion
Against - Looks terrible from the outside and hard to tell the difference between it and a C200 in AMG guise
M3
For - looks epic, interior is nice
Against - lack of sense of occasion, boring engine, limited traction frustrates especially in the wet - THIS IS NOT A CHALLENGE, it's bloody infuriating
I've never had an RS car, but I am thinking that Audi could pull a blinder here if they the RS4 is good.

It cant be so bad that an Audi would be better, surely? Has BMW really sunk so low?!For me the differences are simple and overall both cars are flawed:

It's synthesised sound pumped through the speakers. It's not audible to anyone outside the car and it doesn't attempt to alter the sound of the engine in any way. I don't like the principle one bit either - but as it stands I find it imperceptible in my M5. If I turn a window down or open the sunroof I hear the car as it is, without any trickery.Options....do people tick that many box's?
The Merc is 67K there about, for the S model then a couple of ticks and its 73k. Now if it were me I would not tick the wheels and thus its 71k car. The other options did seem to give you a whole load of extra toys.
The BM though is 57K and then with box's ticked is 73K this is what I don't, when I buy a car its what I can afford etc I don't buy one thinking I will spend 15 or 20k less then option it up.
I have seen loaded cars on the classifieds but I wonder if most of these were dealer specials etc an not ones first bought by private customers. Has anyone ever put 20K of options on a car?
Oh an Merc for me the estate.

For the first time in a long time I desire neither the M or the AMG. The Merc has the better engine including noise but they've become too chintzy and they still insist on lumbering their AMG's with boring auto's.
The M3\M4 has a boring engine and the fake noise is too obviously fake (yes I have tried one). It does have a manual option which is it's saving grace so at a push it would be a manual M3 with some money chucked at it to try to remap the power delivery and pep-up the noise a bit but I'd not spend £60k+ on either tbh.

I think a lot will come down to personal preference and whether you need the practicality that the Mercedes range (and the Audi RS series to be fair) offers.
I'm lucky enough to have a job where I get to drive pretty much anything currently in production and have tried most of those comparable (RS4/5/6, M3/4, C63/E63 etc). I have to say that it's probably the slowest but I had more fun in the Lexus RCF than anything else (11MPG was pretty shocking too!), although saying that if I was shopping for one I'd end up with the RS4 (dogs and wouldn't trust Mrs Simo with that much power through the back wheels... and she would have to drive it.... from time to time).

Ths is the first generation of M/AMG cars that i have no desire to own. I'd take the Alfa over these every time or maybe the Mustang at 50% of the price
Agreed, I think if I was looking to spend £60k+ on a saloon, it would be the new Alfa Romeo QV or a Maserati Ghibli, at least the Italians still seem to understand that a performance car should be about passion, not just meeting emissions\mpg\0-60 stats. The Mustang is also an absolute bargain compared to the overpriced Germans.

Can this be switched off? Or is it constantly pumping engine noise into the cabin.I haven't experienced it, but imagine that would annoy me.

I haven't found a way of doing so and the consensus would seem to be no. And, yes, it is intensely annoying, the more so given the engine actually sounds really cool from the outside. Well, I think so. My neighbours might not have done this morning as I fired it up, backed up against their wall at 4:30am... Dan
