To be honest as you can see from my post count/time, I was posting on PH before YouTube existed in its current form, and many years before I even uploaded a video. The reality is that if I created content now that was what PH users wanted to see, the view count would be so small that the model wouldn't work as a business and therefore I wouldn't be doing it at all. Bit of a catch-22!
I'm struggling to reconcile your views that ph friendly content wouldn't work with the suggestion that 96% of your audience is over 18.RSK21 said:

Simple; Top Gear (previous iteration) was made as an entertainment show first, car show second. Die hard car fans aren't a huge majority, the general audience is there to a more open content type. For clarification, viewing ages quoted are as presented to me by YouTube Analytics.

Think about it.
YouTube Analytics is not a good source of finding viewers' ages. It nay be the only important one, but the whole concept is deeply flawed;
e.g
My daughter is 7. She looks at YT which is set to my age. If she watched Shmee, the fact that the Analytics would gather data as her being my age, which would ruin the truth in the analytics.
It works both ways. There isn't a real chance of finding real viewers ages, unless you survey the viewers, but even then there will be flaws such as
A) not enough viewers complete the survey (Analytics gathers viewing data whether they like it or not)
B) Joke submissions, i.e unrealistic additions such as viewers age is 104 years old or 2 years old
C) Unreliable surveying.
Therefore there isn't even a point in gathering analytics because in the most case it's not even close.

Also in general has the growth subscriber numbers has been slowing down? Especially after that cull they did and launching an add campaign....
In reality the videos are about showing 'consumption' with cars just being the chosen medium. But the key is that what people tune in to watch in viable numbers is the act of consumerism and as such the audience is the best to monetise as they will generally fall into the groups of lower educated, less intelligent or young and so perfect for advertising gilded lifestyle tat to. Make a channel purely about the car and not about consumerism and you will probably lose 90% of the audience most likely to throw money they don't have at chattels they will never need. To harvest Morlocks you have to keep it low brow, short and exciting start attempting to use long words or maybe teaching something and they get scared and run away. Huge majestic herds stampeding to the safety and security of a video about cats leaving behind about 8 people who are actually interesting in learning, not terrified by it.
Watched that supercar shopping video afew days back, i rather enjoyed that little insight/look into dubai. I thought it was rather funny seeing so much expensive motors in fairly normal looking dealers in what appeared like a retail park of sorts? Was also interesting seeing the 'different' way in which some people colour code their cars.
Follows a Mercedes G500 around the streets and talks about performance whilst being overtaken by a Toyota Yaris and every other fking cab driver within 10 miles. If this is the future of car journalism it is not 'awesome' it is just 'ste'.After seeing your comment I watched about 6min of that before I lost interest. I couldn't see any yaris but there was a fiesta that overtook him. I'm not sure how else you expect someone to drive someones squillion quid supercar on roads you aren't familar with while still trying to have a conversation.

A little harsh, no?I'm 57, 3 children, ok income, averagely materialistic, Oxford-educated, lived and worked in 4 different countries... yet I still enjoy Shmee's videos.
I come to YouTube essentially for easy relaxation, not education. Plenty of magazines or other websites where one can find more detailed information if desired.
For me, Shmee and the like are just "light entertainment", and that can be enjoyed by anyone in the right context/mood, however far their brow might be from the ground.

Agreed. There's too much snobbery about Schmee's content. I really enjoy watching his videos, well put together and fun. Even my partner enjoys watching his videos and she has only a passing interest in cars. We are both educated professionals in our late 30s. this (aside from the sponsorship stuff which I can dial out of) is the main issue for me.It does get strangely wearing when the adjectives only increase in frequency, and negativity doesn't further the business case.
So you start in 2010 for example with "This 360 is really nice, hmm like that"
to something in 2016 that becomes : THIS 488 IS SUPER SUPER MEGA AWESOME MENTAL INSANE!...I SIMPLY DON'T HAVE THE WORDS!"
Well you do... and you've used them all.... repeatedly...
...sometimes...we can hear and see how good it is from a well filmed segment...with a few good cameras/drones/mics....
but again, I'm not and it shouldn't be directed solely at Shmee. The content on there is plentiful and if you're not in the mood you try something else...
