First Sol (Supercars of London) needs to sell up and now STG (Seen through glass) is selling the McLaren and the Abarth.

Financial common sense is kicking in !

Just posted a new video. Interested on feedback.
I know it's not the 'gritty' factual reviews some may crave, but being that guy would be me trying to be someone else. My video is essentially giving the car a pasting and having a laugh with a friend, (Paul Wallace).

Go easy on me...
Had to exit after a few seconds, can't cope with the daft hat....smile

@TGE

What was your 2015 Mini JCW like to live with? Any comments?

Love the videos and have seen you around the city!

I feel the issue right now is all the major automotive related channels on YT have reached their peak and they're running out of ideas.
It's 100% true that the ideas dry up because there's only so much you can do within this tight niche. It's like any form of media; TV shows have a period of time through which they can last, likewise computer game series and more. At the end of the day the aim is to make the most of it while it lasts I guess and perhaps some will manage to make it much longer term but in general the genre will slowly decline at some point.

I don't see a lot of the vlogger types as being in the same league as Catchpole, Harris et al in terms of production and quality of insight. Perhaps that is not quite fair to say... what I mean is, they aren't really producing the same sort of content or targeting the same audience; its not really car review content. Its lifestyle content.
Agree with a lot of your full post. I want to make one point that a lot of people miss too, as the person who has basically been doing 'this' the longest. I'm still only about 3-4 years in to driving cars to make video content whereas someone like Chris Harris was on camera nearly 20 years ago! I've got an awful lot to learn, and so do the others, but we've fallen into this space accidentally rather than by applying for jobs and now we've got to learn the skills retrospectively.

Good lord.
Why is that a problem!?

Catchpole is great at portraying what the moderns are like and I love the way he describes things, this sets him a league above the other video bloggers.

What none of them seem to be able to do in an engaging way is get under the skins of the cars and make the grubby bits interesting. When was the last time one of the YouTubers actually opened on bonnet or peered under a car to describe how the car is actually able to do what it does??
I know it's not quite what you meant but I am going to add that I open the bonnet of cars in just about every in-depth video I do. However same as my comment above, Catchpole/Bovingdon/Harris etc etc all have a huge wealth of experience over myself and the other YouTube guys and we are all learning retrospectively.

Streetrod said:
The problem with a lot of people nowadays is that cars have become white goods to a certain extent, how many of this current crop of Youtubers actually own even a basic tool set? I think the tone was set for me when a while ago Shmee replaced the gear knob on his Mini and was also unable to diagnose a simple fault when his Mini broke down once. All of there knowledge is superficial and disposable
I don't think that is entirely fair. I spoke to two guys who could have known on the phone and neither could diagnose it, and even the AA chap took an hour to work it out (messing up the fuel hose in the process which later needed sorting). I had asked everybody I had spoken to if something was likely to trip on a big bump and nobody worked it out.

Streetrod said:
Shmee I think missed a massive opportunity when he did the build series on his GT8 and LT. He had access to the factories but never once asked a probing question that would provide that nugget of really interesting information that would be the cherry on the cake. I would have loved to have seen a visit to Ricardo to see the LT's engine being built and a decent conversation with an engineer to discuss why they did things this way or that.
Arranging this type of content is a horrendous amount of work, it's wonderful in theory but when you start getting down to it you end up spending weeks of solid work just to make one video piece when the reality is I want to be putting out content daily.

With the GT8 content, I was guided by Aston Martin as to what I could do and there's a lot behind the scenes you don't see to make even that level possible.

In terms of the 675LT Spider, McLaren wouldn't even let me visit it on the production line, let alone make any content.

I'd love to do something with my AMG GT R that's about to go into build but again it doesn't look that likely. A lot of this is done at random times with no notice and obviously travel schedules don't necessarily work for that either.

To be honest, I enjoy Shmee's stuff - he doens't come across as annoying to me at all. He seems quite a friendly bloke who enjoys what he does. Was quite funny to hear his voice appear on radio Le Mans whilst we were all nursing hangovers on the Tertre Rouge campsite this year.

Same with Gaskings, fair play to him building up his audience by using content which is already out there but he took the time to produce it as themed comedy compilations featuring himself (voice or in person) as opposed to the countless click-bait shat produced by someone in India (with awful dance music mixes) which litter You Tube at the mo.

The others I follow are Sol, TGE TV, STG and MR JWW. They all seem sound blokes to me and some may be wealthy from the outset, but all look like they enjoy what they're doing. Fair play to them. I certainly feel like a chav with my C63 AMG coupe when I watch their stuff.

I'd love to get off my fat @rse and do what the above are doing. BTW, I'm 42 so I guess I'm not their target audience, but it's all good sh*t to me!

Shmee, by the way I am not have a personal dig when I make these comments, its more from a frustrated viewers perspective.

Anyway re you comments. I understand the difficulty in getting access but of the current crop surely you best placed at the moment, plus your support team should be able to package up a proposal that would not only work for you but bring great exposure to the likes of McLaren, AM and AMG as social medai becomes more of their marketing shop window

And if as you say the ideas are running out surely this is a great time to start forging these other channels.

We tried to pitch such an idea to Ford after I received the allocation for a GT but that quickly turned into a car due at the end of 2019, which isn't hugely helpful! I don't know what will happen so far away.

I don't think with the likes of Mercedes for the GT R and Porsche for the GT3 have much room for access. It worked with Aston as many things lined up at once; not many secrets to avoid, dates I could make it to the factory, staff available etc. I do have one car on order at the moment that would have potential for something similar and you can bet I'll be trying but more on that later in the year.

So TGE is not a trader, but works on the trading floor. Does that mean the 'The City’s Busiest Worker' is the guy that comes around with the snacks trolley?

Serious question (purely out of interest) for TGE - where do you keep all your cars?! With the ones you currently have and the list you have on order - do you manage to keep any at home or are they in an underground lock up somewhere like Shmee's? Does that mean you have to drive somewhere to pick a car up before you can take it out? Must be a struggle in central London!

Well this is hilarious, loads of these flash YouTube s have realised they can't actually afford super cars and are flogging them so they can afford things like... A house!

The bottom has well and truly fallen out of the YouTube car game. They have run out of ideas, YouTube has taken away the bulk of the as revenue, no doubt the manufacturers are realising that these channels don't sell cars considering most of audience are twelve year old boys.

It's finished. Done. Over.

Long live the realistic channels like dannydc2 and fyd.

On another note... Boosted, you look like a Justin Bieber tribute act. Please go and get a real job, and sell that death trap mx5. Worse car I've seen on YouTube.

TGE works in middle office or back office. His money comes from his bodybuilding book business. Middle office and back office pays st money.

So it seems Sam and Paul are feeling the squeeze from the changes in youtube revenue. I am amazed that neither actually own a house yet. Still I guess they can die tomorrow and say they have lived their dream. I like both for being normal folk hustling away and doing what they enjoy. I personally would need to see over £100m in my bank account before I started spending on the level of some of these guys especially TGE and Mr JWW. Still drove around in a banger when I made my first £1m.

For what it's worth, my revenue is the highest it's ever been, so I'm not entirely sure about that!

No.

I actually like seen through glass. I admit I'm not a fan of supercars of London.

Good luck to them.

If they wanna be up to their eye balls in debt so they can drive a supercar around London at 5mph then so be it.

I just think the whole YouTube market is flooded. I prefer the more realistic channels.
