So I'm doing the morning plod on YouTube, and I came across a Supercars of London video where he does a "fishing challenge" from the inside of a Jaguar F-Type.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RW11dy6p30E

He's completely lost the plot. He thinks he's on Top Gear by doing these "challenges", but he falls way short of the mark. Clarkson would have turned the F-Type into a boat, and failed miserably, but it still would have been amusing.

As friendly as he appears, SOL has the sense of humour of an alley cat with a genital infection. Wacky challenges are for truly wacky people - not for some guy who thinks that ordering the same thing as the guy in front of him at the McDonalds drive-through renders him just too darn savage for this world.
Yep. Because Paul is going to destroy a Jaguar press car isn't he. Get in the sea you whinging queef.

You're missing the point.

He shouldn't do it at all.

He's free to do what he wants.

Whether anybody watches it, or then watches any more of his stuff is a different matter altogether.

I thought Twitter and Facebook were bad, but JFC the comments beneath SOL's fishing video on YouTube take the biscuit.

Mum lines all over the place. Must be demoralising for Paul, Shmee, TGE etc having to read through that rubbish. Makes Mail Online commenters look like FT letter writers.

I stopped watching SOL ages ago. He’d just financed himself to the hilt for a Lambo or some such, whilst still living at home with his Mum, and the only thing he could think of doing with it, in the next video, was to go to his local Macy D’s and order what the previous driver had ordered on the drive-through. That was the entire video. Definitely a banana short of a full milkshake, that one.

Or maybe there's a logical reason, prior history

I'm of the opinion Paul is actually being rather clever. He know's now is the peak time for car vlogging, and as we move forward there's a good chance an order of respectable CAR vloggers will be established (schmee, james?) , who will get the preferences from manufacturers.

Paul seems to be moving more towards general lifestyle content, which is where the massive youtube gaming channels have gone. Just do fun things and film them, but his is loosely based around cars (there was even discussion recently of renaming the channel to just SOL)

Cheaper production, more scope for different content (we're all moaning the car guys all seem to be recycling the same stuff over and over), and the biggest group of youtube viewers (young men) drink it up.

Go watch a Pewdiepie video if you want your blood boiled. He also does rather well.

That's because it lacked any sort of creativity whatsoever. They do challenges which aren't even proper challenges. They could do a transcontinental race, where they start from different parts of Europe and the first person to the Aston Martin headquarters wins. That'd be great to watch! And don't tell me they couldn't sort it out, because they could. Easily.

Instead, they seem out of ideas, or are too lazy to put any meaningful effort into their content. I'd be embarrassed if I were them. You have to remember, this is their job. And while they're free to do what they want, poor quality content won't help them one bit.

It has nothing to do with 'doing well'. It has to do with the quality of content. He is putting in zero effort.

It was fine when he was posting 30 second clips of Lambo owners leaving their tops down in the rain a few years back, but it seems that the only reason he's uploading these days is because he needs the gravy train to keep going.

My point wasn't about the content, but about the YouTube viewers' comments in general.

If the readers don't enjoy it, by all means say something critical, but calling people r3tards for not agreeing with something is somewhat reta stupid.

SOL has never been a real car channel. It has always been about spotting and vlogs rather than actual car related content.
I think that´s definitely the right way for him... let´s just face it paul knows almost nothing about cars.

He even got one of the best improvement of his huracan wrong, he said the engine is off center for weight distribution but that is total nonsense. The Huracan´s engine is off center to get the driveshaft for the front wheels next to the engine rather than under it. This lowers the engine a few cm.

I am just been reading the new Octane magazine which has just dropped through my door and have fallen upon an advert for Archie Hamilton's dads classic car business "Duncan Hamilton & Co Ltd". Now his dad has a couple of serious cars for sale, the first an ex Derek Bell 1976 Jag XJ12C Broadspeed and a rare 1964 Dodge Dart that has raced at the Goodwood Revival. Now these cars currently share a garage with his R8.

This has to be a perfect platform to raise himself above and beyond the normal vloggers, whilst at the same time promoting his dads business. Imagine he took these cars to Goodwood to film and demonstrate them. With his racing experience and not having to thrash them, he could produce a great video about the history of these cars and what they are like to drive. The noise would be enough to attract a huge number of likes.

If he did this his credibility would jump through the roof, or maybe his dad just does not want anything to do with his sons YouTube ramblings

There's a reason why the only people to do that sort of thing are Top Gear and the Grand Tour - cost. The cost of doing that would be huge and they'd never get it back from YT earnings. So what's the point?

Their current style is quick, cheap and yields good returns, not need to change that from their perspective.

Everyone has their niche on YT.

Some like chirpy Schmee. Some like wacky SoL. Some like nerdy Autocar.

Different people like different things.

I will say something for Paul/SOL, he isn’t a half bad presenter. But yes, we’re all looking for different things from these videos, but I think most of us would agree, compared to McDonalds Roulette, STG’s latest, earns a Michelin star: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRIbDLwTQJk

That's part of his business to keep his YouTube channel going. If that means the odd rubbish video every now and then what's the harm. Must be doing something right with over 600k subs.

Not a single video of my >3,000 has been hit by this fortunately so it hasn't affected my channel at all. By keeping 'clean' in content has kept me out of trouble more than once before now as well as quite honestly being the right image I want to show.
