Are these Vloggers just a scam? SOL or Shmee etc???????
Discussion
Interesting reading the above regarding some of the bigger vloggers trying to keep a grasp on private life vs. what you show on camera.
I'm at that stage right now, almost thinking about throwing the towel in with it to be honest. I don't think the vlogger life is a very healthy one, lot of stress, people mainly... It's hard to have a private life at all, certainly not on social media. My personal Facebook is awash now with friend requests and messages from people who I don't know, with good intentions, but I'd rather that didn't happen. I enjoy chatting to some people, but most of the time I just can't be arsed, and I have a feeling I'd need to start engaging with people more if I want any growth. (That's never been the goal anyway..)
I have a new space to work on my cars, a new unit lets say (it's a sweet barn really). Announcing this to my subscribers is something I'm not sure how to do, or if I want to do. It's taken me so long to get a space like this that I want to make sure I take every precaution to ensure I can keep it for a long time. I'm slightly paranoid that inviting the internet to join me in this area whilst I work away at my cars, although fun, may risk the security of the place. I made a video at the weekend and in the intro I explained about the place, whilst editing last night I had the thoughts of, should I really be saying this?
Obviously I'd never say where it was, but I feel like it wouldn't be difficult to work out. I know there's no chance anyone would trawl through YouTube looking for targets, but I think I have the right to be cautious.
What do you lot reckon? Are other 'car vloggers' wary about where they keep their toys? I used to watch a lot of Mighty Car Mods, and those guys went for years working outside their house on a drive, even with the door number on display.
Part of me thinks I'm too far down the rabbit hole now anyway, and I've got a few good things going with Micks Garage and Hybrid Racing, it would be a shame to lose the benefits I've gained which have spawned from doing something I love... (playing with cars & making videos!)
I've gotta decide if the juice is worth the squeeze (maybe I'll go back to making Readers Cars threads on here )

You know how careful i am with telling people where my unit is. I Fell out with a few close friends because they tagged the location on Instagram more than once and it now results in me barely having anyone over to help. & I completely agree with the whole constant interaction but I think that just comes with the territory dude. Maybe just dont film outside the unit? just keep vlogs inside so no one sees the location ? I'm at that stage right now, almost thinking about throwing the towel in with it to be honest. You've got such a loyal audience, would be a shame to give up. Never hurts to have a little break like you are though, I had one earlier in the year and it only respawned my love for making videos !
MCM actually said they had to find a unit away from their house because it was one of their mums houses they did it at and people would turn up and do burnouts, have small meets out side it etc constantly. That is one of the main worries, other than something getting pinched.
But for me obviously I have the parts store and im more than happy if people come down & visit but we've also had it a few times where people turn up at 9 & dont leave until 5 and expect me to entertain them all day with conversation.
Which I do understand, but I'd hope they would have the mindset that they are coming to my place of work where I need to, you know, work to earn a real living.
My only slight irritant is where people turn up to track days or drift days (where im going to be driving & take part in it) and just constantly linger around, not talking or making conversation just lingering & just expect the same banter they see online between me and my closest friends to flow with them, obviously years of growing trust with someone turns into just being horrible to each other naturally as english guys lol.
But like i said im cool with it but id rather they'd talk, or add something to the conversation at least (or at a minimum say who they are)
Have to say I do enjoy working on my car without the camera sometimes, but I know more than anything I get enjoyment out of watching my videos back in the future. I do now, so I guess its up to you man. People love your videos, just depends if you get out of it the same enjoyment as you did from when you started.

Also, I dont want you to throw in the towel. No disrespect to Mr Shmee & all the other supercar youtubers but we need guys like you (and i hope myself lol) to show that not everyone in england who makes youtube rolls around in brand new supercars. Nothing better than seeing an Old honda being smashed around a track or a drift car being bounced off the limiter to some of us! I'm at that stage right now, almost thinking about throwing the towel in with it to be honest.
Personally, I hope you keep making videos. Its going to be hilarious to look back in 20 year and see what sort of scruffs we were (probably still are).

I'm glad you and Danny do the Youtube thing. I dipped my toe in but I don't have the time or energy to do it any more than I have TBH.

Yeah man that is weird. As well as people wanting pictures with me/the car. I'd rather not have that. Sometimes I wish people who do enjoy the videos and want to get involved just to keep the discussions to YouTube. I don't really want to meet and greet people like TGE did in that Aventador vid. (Just had a skim through - fuk that).YouTube comments are great, I've got one guy who leaves me a lengthy energetic review on pretty much every video, and he's always so positive. I look forward to them every time

yeah defiantly love getting comments too, My favourite commentor is a guy from LA who leaves me these like, Gangster esc hilariously positive comments on every video. I actually look forward to having him leave a comment haha YouTube comments are great, I've got one guy who leaves me a lengthy energetic review on pretty much every video, and he's always so positive. I'll still be a scruff when im older, cant beat it lol even if i one day end up in the position to buy a Lamborghini, Ferrari etc like Shmee & TGE TV - i'd still end up buying an R34 GTR & wearing my old nike trackies. I'm glad you and Danny do the Youtube thing. I dipped my toe in but I don't have the time or energy to do it any more than I have TBH.
my comfort zone lol

I might just have to start being a savage and showing people that not everyone who makes YouTube videos is a nice guy.
Well, you know me personally, I think I'm a nice guy, but DannyDC2 - he's a c*nt!

Yes, MCM did a load of stuff on their/their parents driveways... and got loads of people turning up unannounced as they got bigger, so it's with good reason that you cannot tell at all where their current workshop is.I'm at that stage right now, almost thinking about throwing the towel in with it to be honest. I actually dropped a message to Rob Ferretti when he did a video on his house, as he'd left the details on show so you could see the address, but he said he wasn't bothered (and had a gun).
I don't get the fanboy angle really. I like chatting to people whose stuff I watch/read, but I never think of it as being anything other than discussing a shared interest. Maybe it's because I'm an arrogant bd, and the concept of them being somehow my "better" doesn't enter my head, so I'm not going to be running around like a hyper preteen with my camera going "OMG I can't believe it's really him!" or whatever.
Just keep making videos on your own terms, about the things you want to. People can either watch them or not.

Nail=head! I just don't understand the fanboy angle either, for the exact reasons you've said. Maybe it is arrogance, I have no aspiration to be a big YouTuber hence never offering stickers or T shirts with my name on it. Just seems weird to me, and if anything it will attract the wrong "fanbase" if we can call it that (cringe!)Just keep making videos on your own terms, about the things you want to. I'd rather just piss about with my cars and make the odd video about it, long may it continue if I can get over the above. I've been thinking it for a while though. Maybe just thicker skin is required, and I'll have to explain to people that I don't want to be their friend.
Danny - I hope you continue to do as you have been. I've seen a much more varied selection (of the kind of cars I enjoy) as a result of your vids. I would keep the workshop location etc to yourself though, for security if nothing else.
Re FaceBook, I would have a one account related to the YouTube stuff and a second one for friends and family. You can use a false surname to keep some privacy and real friends and family will know who you are easily enough. I don't use my surname on FaceBook myself.
Some folk clearly love all the attention and YT celebrity status and inflated sense of self importance with the hangers on. Good luck to them. Once you lose your privacy though, I doubt it's an easy thing to get back.
