I quite like some of Salomondrins merch because you can wear it without it being obvious where its from however a sweatshirt with "Hello One And All" in big letters on the front a la STG is super cringe

Funny you should say that, I've always been dead against it for the reasons stated. Cringe.

BUT, I did actually write a plan the other week to introduce merchandise for those who want it. I'm talking about stickers and mugs, simple tat. There has been a call for stickers and stuff for a long time.

It mostly doesn't exist because of the extra workload it would create. I think merchandise would be good in a sense that it gives me an extra bit of pocket money, but it's a lot of time investment for little yield.

I wrote the plan and haven't really looked at it again since. If you haven't noticed I'm feeling a bit down with the YouTube stuff lately. I'm sure those who make regular videos in here will agree, it's a lifestyle more than a hobby, if you want to be any good at it. The YouTube game is tough on the mind, the pressure of trying to make every video as entertaining as the previous video is hard. I never thought of myself as being self-conscious but I can't help feeling a little upset whenever I get a bad comment or a dislike. On the run up to xmas I was forcing myself to spend extended periods in a freezing barn with a fake smile on my face thinking I was enjoying it, I wasn't!

I like making videos, I like playing with cars, I'm sure I'll get back into it shortly.

As you were wink
Always remember people will moan far more online than they would in real life because it's easier than face to face.

If the channels becoming a grind maybe reduce the content to the integra and the new car or just film the track days and drifting days ?

Yeah, I get it, especially when it comes to things like fixing the cars and just wanting the work done. People don't always realise that for someone to film doing the work adds such a disproportionate amount of time to the job.

Officially any time but my own travel arrangements are so all over the place, not to mention working out how to get the registration side of things sorted in Germany so it's taking some time.

The YouTube monetisation change is interesting.

Shmee, as one of the channels that's going to be managed "manually" with the preferred status (I think you said yours was?), do you see this as benefiting you with more effective ads and support from YT, or just a kneejerk over Logan Paul that at best won't do anything helpful, and could cause hassle?
You are correct that my channel is on the Preferred list, but I do not yet know exactly what this means. Things have been going pretty well recently in terms of monetising the content that I am producing with each successive month through 2018 becoming a record breaker in pure RPM terms. I'd be more concerned it will go the other way initially as any change seems to bring negative results until it settles again.

Shmeee, out of interest how much did you get paid for doing the Autosport show?
Not necessarily enough for the workload that was involved but it was an awful lot of fun and huge learning experience.

He does every video on his channel in this style, it's not a one off.

Ok, thanks. I wasn't sure if maybe theyd tried to sell the idea a bit to the preferred channels, with the idea that having actual humans reviewing content and ad placement etc would improve the relevance of adverts assigned to given channels/videos, improve click-through rates on adverts and so on.

You'd think that people would have worked out that trying this kind of thing with the White Moose Cafe - whose entire schtick is trolling people online - is going to go badly.

I wonder if 'DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM in the youtube / social media world' has ever been mentioned and then ended up getting whatever freebie they were hoping for, in exchange for a hashtag promotion - or is that how it all works?

Good response from the hotel owner.

You have to be very careful which social-media "stars" you work with, if any. So many of them buy tens or hundreds of thousands of subscribers now, it's getting ever harder to tell which ones are real or fake.

Proper cringe, as I imagine some influencers say in their #Insta #Stories

Interesting part: She added: 'These were all 30 years plus people internet bullying a 22-year-old girl who is just trying to run her own business and raise awareness of what appeared to be a stunning Dublin hotel.'

Ms Darby also claimed the response was hindering 'the younger generation from doing what they enjoy' and that she 'cried my eyes out in my car alone'. {end)

Incredible sense of entitlement! I wonder if the auto vloggers go out begging for free holidays and cars in return for posts etc or if brands approach them?

Any finance gurus here? If your business is 'influencer / social media personality', could these trips be taxable benefits?

ETA - messed up formatting.

I most certainly have never begged for anything, but of course we have sat down with many car companies to discuss options of content creation and brands with regards to working with them. If there's never any form of approach in any area of business, then nothing would ever be done.

With regards to BIK and the tax side; it's been discussed a bit before and while I cannot speak for everyone it highly depends on the individual circumstances; self-employment versus limited company, and a whole barrage of other aspects that would make it impossible for anybody here to really weigh in.

I think it was touched upon in the Supercar rental thread about freebies too.

There is a huge difference between formally working with a car company/tyre manufacturer/hotel chain to produce something informative and entertaining, and trying to blag a freebie on the basis that they'll get a good review in front of x,000 subscribers.

The latter sounds too much like blackmail - if they don't get the freebie the company will be slated.

Seb Delanney has moved out from his parents home to rent a modest place/palace, as you do.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=433MgaNmKC8

Seb: “Keep in mind we’re both 21 years old, I know the apartment is not like the sickest thing in the world, so don’t go too harsh on us in the comments”

Not the 'sickest'? Most of us would class that as a dream house, yet no where in the comments can I see anyone questioning how he can afford it. However, he is finally going to do an exposé on his secret car selling business, which will no doubt explain everything. Yeah, right.

How much do you reckon the rent comes to on this?

Boo fking hoo. You put yourself up as an 'influencer' then you've got to accept others influencing you back, as the guy did in this case.

That said imo she went about this the wrong way. Contra deals are common and often suit both parties, she's just pish at approaching it. One example being the claim about Universal, put a verifiable stat on that or stfu.

Good to see some positive news for Seb and his new house should make for some awesome content especially when the other YT'bers go up and stay with him.

The location and views from this villa is beyond impressive so the property itself is probably worth quite a bit of money but shocking to the condition it's in. It's in desperate need of reno's. And hard to say what the rent could be because I'm thinking either Seb or his friend might have some sort of family connection with the owner of the house to rent out a floor. My guess would be around 1500€-2500€ max.

There was a video doing the rounds a while back by some cameraman/video editor from Dubai who did a video for Yiannimize at the latter's request and was offered a 'shout out' by Yianni in lieu of payment. The video was produced and put on the Yiannimize channel but the 'shout out' never arrived. When the bloke complained Yianni gave him the whole 'don't forget who you're talking to here, show me some respect, i'll decide if and when to give you a shout out' shebang (the bloke put up the whats-app messages). hehe
