Know someone who runs a (small) company that has been mentioned and featured in a handful of YouTuber "meets" since the New Year (they are late to the game). They spent half-a-day filming one 15-minute video, and they've since seen about ~£10k of new business from people who saw it and rang them up to get work done and mentioned the videos.

Social media does work, if targeted accurately. It's just online word-of-mouth. Not rocket science.
How interesting

Tim, quick question if I may.
With all your globe trotting, which mobile phone provider do you use for calls and data?
Or do you have a pocket full of SIM cards for each country?

Welp.

Sunday I uploaded a video about whether you can use trackday tyres year round.

It was tracking quite well for me, all the comments were positive, 180 likes and 1 dislike, 5k views in 24 hours, then a few hours ago it got nearly 800 dislikes in a few minutes.

I'm assuming a "youtube bomb" bot, but won't know until the stats update in 48 hours. There was a thread on reddit about this last week, it totally kills the video as that ratio of like to dislikes means it will get dropped even from your subscribers suggested.

Can't think of anyone who would want to do that to my channel as I have no real competition in my niche frown Tim, have you ever had anything like that before?

I primarily use a 3 sim card, but I have a PD Mate 10 and frequently swap the sim in the second slot for different countries - as you expect I have a bit of a selection. I also have a variety of mobile hot spots because you never know when a video needs to be uploaded from a car or with to circumvent a failing hotel WiFi network.

Do not fear! The YouTube algorithms do not differentiate Likes and Dislikes, they count as one metric for the stats to prevent damaging effects from this kind of action. Unless something has changed, this was specifically done so that these kind of bot behaviours wouldn't damage legitimate content.

I've never had it happen or even seen it, you have to wonder how or why it would do, what the benefit is to somebody etc.

Maybe someone doesn't like MrJWW, and cocked up attacking "British Youtuber with Michelins" with downvotes...

Tony's a really lovely bloke. I get on with him quite well because he's a fair bit older than TGE/Archie/Paul/Sam (as I am), has a family, that sorta thing. He probably comes across as a 'hanger on' as he hasn't got his own YT channel, and doesn't intend to. He's really got into the whole YT scene as a way to enjoy his cars a lot more and get some exposure for Gravelwood Car Sales which has really worked AFAIK.

With a 488 Spider, Huracan Performante and 991.2 GT3 he's got a better car collection than the rest too, plus they get driven a lot more as he does a lot of Supercar Driver events.
You know some of these guys? Why haven't you mentioned this before?

You know that SOL is really scraping the bottom of the barrel when he releases a 12min video about speed bumps.

Just checked, that's crazy man wtf! Have you got in touch with YouTube about it?

As Shmee said, you might actually see an increase in engagement from it though, every cloud!

What a small world - I've used your website quite a few times to help me decide what tyres to get. Subbed to your channel, I'm quite geeky when it comes to stuff like that.

How many people realistically choose their tyres because some bloke on YT runs them for money?
More than you'd think. Outside of people on Pistonheads or enthusiast forums many won't know what tyres to buy and when they see someone they are a fan of using a certain tyre they will instantly think it's the best choice (rightly or wrongly).

Less about direct instant sales and more about being front of mind. It's not like everyone tomorrow will go buy a set of Michelins but the next time they need tyres, they may have watched a MrJWW video the night before smile
As above with an example; I honestly hadn't heard of MicksGarage before my deal with them, but now not just myself but my friends are using them over the alternatives, simply because of my videos...

It works!
I can see that with smaller, more localised businesses (no offence meant) but am surprised a company the size of Michelin are making such a big deal about engaging with a YT influenza. Good luck to him (JWW) though, I don't watch his videos, or any that might be deemed ''aspirational vlogs'' as the whole ''super cars, diamond encrusted watches, Dubai'' thing holds zero interest for me. That said, what I have seen on his videos, appear far less ''look at me and my faux celebrity lifestyle'' than some we see pop up here.

There's a lot of brand synergy between James and how Michelin want to be seen, I can see why they've done this. Plus, compared to TV, the exposure over the 8 or so videos they'll make together is comparatively cheap.

Tim / Danny, I'm not sure I'm as optimisic as you. Have a read of this:

https://imgur.com/a/QTc8B
http://reddit.com/r/youtube/comments/7y5whw/9749_d...

After a bit of googling, 750 dislikes would have cost someone about $50. I've been in touch with YT, I'll follow up if I get a reply.

Hmm, that's recent as well. Hopefully YouTube will crack down on it soon.

Perhaps it's an attack on your business by a competitor? Keep us updated, interested to know how this goes.

Are you with a network? Only ask as the chap on Reddit was.

I'm not sure being in a network made a huge difference to the situation as described, other than adding another layer of people saying "sorry, we can't do anything"...

I guess just see what happens with future videos. It's entirely possible it's nothing to do with you at all, and it's just someone who really hates Michelin, or a Cup Sport 2 ran over his cat or whatever. If it isn't happening to you regularly, my guess would be that rather being an attack on your channel, something about that video happened to get you caught by how someone's set up an automated bot downvoting of videos that meet certain criteria.

No network sadly, I don't monetize my videos normally. The one advantage of being the only person in the world geeky enough to bother reviewing tyres is that I have no real competitors hehe Apart from MrJWW now... scratchchin (joke, I know James)

I'm leaning towards a random event, but will see what YT say.

Actually, I take that back. 15th Feb, no unusual watch time and had a spike of dislikes on a different video

ETA, I had no views from Russia or Ukraine on that video on that day!

Ridiculous. YT need to get a grip on this PDQ or their algos and channel will be worthless in fairly short order. Of course, this must beg the question; if you're video has been clobbered negatively, are some exploiting/paying robots to get bunked up in the ratings?

Perhaps it's just some tt testing their bot, and you fell victim...

Same source as the chap on Reddit too. Damn Eastern bots, they destroyed Twitter now they're taking our YouTube!

YouTube replied yet?

P.S good work pieing off the networks - I get the occasional email from them wanting to "team up" etc. Load of ste.

Agreed, I was only curious as the chap on Reddit mentioned being part of a network, and I thought it could have been an attack on the network rather than totally random.

Just trying to help piece it together smile
