£55k for a supercharged 6.2l V8 with 576BHP...
But at what cost?
55k. And a Vauxhall badge. And when I bought it a 100k/lifetime warranty.
Yes, I think that's a price many buyers in this segment would not pay.

Ah, the wonderful brand snobbery of this country. No other nation hates on domestic brands so much!

It's more about brand value than brand snobbery. No one would pay £10k for a Tissot watch even if it had a better internal movement than a £15k Rolex!

I admire your love of the VXR8, I know what it is to think highly of something and have everyone else think you are mad, but in basic business talk, Vaxuhalls cannot be sold for £55k. The brand value isn't there, the same way as Tissots can't be sold for £10k and McDonalds dinners can't be sold for £200 a head, not even on New Year's Eve.

That is a good post about brand value versus brand snobbery.

But that got me thinking, Ford only has a similar brand value as Vauxhall and yet does not struggle to sell the GT for nearly double that £55k.

Confusing!

The difference with Ford is Motorsport heritage. F1, Le Mans, WRC etc...

And this is why the VXR8 is the best value and most PistonHead worthy car IMO. All the toys (turn them off if you don't want them, computer programs do not have a weight impact), ridiculous performance, lovely place to be for at least 20k less than the similarly specced competition. If you buy the competition whilst still knowing that the VXR8 exists you are a numpty and a victim of marketing IMO wink

The problem I had with the VXR8 when I briefly drove an early one is it's just too big, specifically too wide. Mind you I guess the German "compact" execs are just as big these days.

It is fking mahoosive, hence compared to M5 not M3/4. Get on it in the twisties though, and it hides its size impressively. Had a trip through cheddar gorge with a 911 and a cayman s, they did not lose me....

It's nothing to do with "hiding it's size" or not. It was just too big for the roads I wanted to drive it on; I just don't find it enjoyable not being able to alter my line without straying from the lane I'm in. I'm sure it's fine on A-roads and motorways, but not a car I could ever enjoy throwing down a B-road. In fact, to a lesser degree, I had the same problem with the E90 3-series let alone the 5-series. It's one of the reasons I could never buy a modern M3 as a "fun" car although I'd happily have one as a family car.

I think you missed the part about "Cheddar Gorge", it is about as tight and twisty as it comes and I have never had to stray out of my lane, so not sure what you mean. If I can follow a Cayman S line for line through the twisties, then that should tell you something.

I didn't say anything about speed? I said I don't enjoy it.

This was the point I was addressing. Not a speed based point. I took the same line as a 911 and a Cayman S through twisty roads. But, your feelings are the point at the end of the day and you wouldn't choose an M5 so you are not the target market wink But throw it down the twisties and you find its Jekyll...

I was just pointing out why someone might buy an AMG C-class or M3 over the Vauxhall even if they don't care about the badge. For me they are better cars because they're smaller. They're still too big for me, but not to the same extent.

The width is actually one of the things I'm not hugely keen on with the Elise, I'd far rather it was narrower.
