'Stylish' 4x4 for under £5k
Discussion
I am looking for a 4x4 under £5k which is generally reliable, 5 doors and STYLISH. It has to be good on road as well as off but I'm no green laner !.. and I only do about 5,000 miles a year max.
I have a local mechanic who has looked after my cars for over 10 years so no dealer prices for repairs etc..
Having a look through forums I think I have made a final list ( although I'm sure people will disagree )
Subaru Outback 2.5 SE
Volvo XC90 2.4 TD D5
Hyundai Santa Fe 2.2 CRTD
Mercedes-Benz M Class 2.7 ML270 CDI
Mitsubishi Outalnder 2.0D or 2.4Sport
Any comments or OTHER suggestions

Well..I like the size of a 4x4 (Hatchback/Estate), like the handling in bad weather ( ...and yes I have had FWD cars with all weather tyres ), like the anidea of go anywhere if needed ( within reason )...and most importantly, I've had 4x4's in the past and just like them !
I will be using to visit customers occasionally so hence the need to look smart/stylish and although I'd be happy with the fantastic Hilux or Landcruiser, they're massive and look old which my wife would never drive !
cheers

Not sure if I would rate any of those, or any other cheapish 4x4 stylish. But I guess that is subjective.
I had a 2.5 petrol top spec xtrail and for that sort of mileage I would recommend it, capable easy to clean interior and bags of room.
I paid £3.5k with 60k miles on it lasted 18 months with no issues at all.

If you want a go anywhere 4x4 then of those choices I'd go with XC90 or ML.
The Outback is more car oriented and is largely the odd one out in the group. You could also consider a Forrester in this grouping as well.
The rest fit somewhere in between.
Another contender could be the Kia Sorrento? Great reliability and in my view pretty good looking. Probably not the most capable vehicle on the trails but no worse than several of the others.

Increase budget a little for this

Subaru. Legacy Forester or Impreza depending on how much ground clearance you require.

Forester.
Those that buy one, seem to fall in love with them.
Like the impreza the AWD is assymetrical and permanent, so its very sure footed 12months of the year on uk roads.
Symmetrical - part of their design is that each side of the car is a mirror of the other - driveshafts are of equal length; no transfer box on one side yadda yadda DYOR.Those that buy one, seem to fall in love with them.
