Even being a car geek and seeking out interesting stuff, I'm finding this end of the market increasingly vulgar. One big p1ssing competition for makers and future owners alike. 270mph+ seems vital to be parked outside Harrods or in Abu Dhabi...

Yeah, maybe its because I'm getting older but even if I had the cash I don't think the Super-Hyper-Mega-Giga-Cars would feature in my garage (might change my mind if I drove one though) to be honest I think I'd prefer a big effortless GT, Bentley Continental or even non GT, a Tesla Model S or Maserati Quattroport , something as discreet as possible but with plenty of oomph should I want it smile

I wonder how many of these cars see the scary side of 180mph in the real world, or are they mainly just a way of showing you have more money than the next guy.

Set of tyres: £20000 (one set lasts 10000 miles if you're careful, 2500 miles if you do a lot of launches or only 15 minutes if you drive at top speed)
Annual service: £20000
Oil change: £14000 (i was told the engine heads need to come off to reach the oil inspection area)
New set of wheels is requried after every third set of tyres because they glue the tyres to the wheels: £80000 (every 7500-30000 miles)
etc.

What about if you get it all done down at your local VAG indie?

It's presumably got the same parts as the Passat W8? Spark plugs must be bog standard VAG stuff, for example?

I'd agree with all of that apart from including a mention of that Lykan tosh in the same breath as those other cars. laugh
It was engineered by RUF, who know what they are doing. Tosh it is not.

I very much doubt that! This is much more highly tuned.

Yeah, the W16 is turbocharged, but that doesn't mean that the basic engine components, from spark plugs to conrods to piston rings, aren't the same...

As for the Lykan, they offer the pretentious bks to sell to pretentious wkers. Doesn't mean there isn't solid engineering under all the trinketry.

I'd have thought when one considers the veyron engine to be a W16 and the Passat to be a W8, I think it'd be more likely the veyron shares similarities between an Audi V8 rather than a W8, no? wink

Oh, and the bore and stroke are different, too.

The W-engine architecture is all basically the same... nothing to do with the Audi V8.

When you take into account all the costs, including development, they lost about 2 billion on the Veyron, sold 450 in total.

So around £2222222 loss/negative per car sold.

They will never make money it is a folly in extravagance.

But how much did they make (or save/increase brand awareness and value) on advertising? Everyone who's into cars has heard of the Veyron, thus they associate it with VW.

The whole Veyron / Chiron project could be classed as a marketing ploy.
