Does impreza turbo engine & running gear fit?
Wouldn't that ruin a perfectly good original car? If you could find one with a broken engine go fo it (if the engine won't fit in the front, make it mid-engined)

These were great in the snow when you clicked on 4 wheel drive, narrow tyres and light weight it could cope with quite tricky conditions but the rest of the time they were was not much fun as low powered and soft suspension.

Our family went through a Subaru owning phase in the early 90's as we lived in a remote hilly area - when it snowed we would be one of the last roads in the county to be cleared due to having so few houses up there and the gritters/snow ploughs concentrated on main roads and school run roads.

At one point we had a Justy 4wd, an XT turbo 4wd and a Sumo Van 4wd.
This was long before Subaru's had become cool with their rally program, most Subaru's were owned by farmers and were pick ups or knackered looking estate cars with seemingly unbreakable mechanicals.

I owned x2 of these back in the day. First i had the GL then upgraded to the GLI injection model.

3 cylinder, 9 valve it was an amazing little car!
Paid £350.00 for it

Never went wrong and was really ahead of its time being able to select 4x4 off the touch of a button even when moving. (not even the big expensive range rovers could do this)

Only 4 left on the UK roads, probably a few more off-road 'ghosts' but that is sad. Here in Bosnia i can see one from my terrace and there's another one in town.Once you get proper high profile winter tyres on them they are real mountain sherpas.
I bet you've never seen a 'Golf Country', the lhd only 4x4 built on the Mk2 Golf platform , in Graz Puch naturally, i see a couple of them as well, in all weathers.

They now shamelessly put the Justy name on a real crapbox. The old 4x4 Justy is a real jewel, just use the right tyres.
