I had a 996 C4S, the one that the internet said would lunch itself with IMS issues. Had it for over a year and put around 15k if i remember rightly, sold it 2 years ago and had a email off a guy who bought it off the person who bought it off me and its still going fine.
My Vantage has its original clutch, has 27k on clock, was a ex Factory car and clutch is fine. Admittedly its not ASM but the reverse gearing is the same. Yes, reverse in a Vantage is almost like pulling away in 2nd but you live with it and plan ahead. Never had an issue with it and my drive way has a slight incline.
The Internet is full of stories like above, some you take notice of and some with the proverbial salt.

Ill get a phone call now from home saying "the car wont move and there is a burning smell"!!

TBH, if you don't pack at least 600bhp in that rarified atmosphere, you aren't taking it seriously...

Wel lthis is even more confusing:

According to Car "Our sources suggest the 5.2 will become the company's most powerful V12 in history, despite the reduction in capacity; the twin turbochargers mean that its power output will be in excess of 600bhp. It will again be built in Cologne, at Aston's engine plant in Ford's factory.

So it is all Aston's own work. They will take V8's from AMG. However someone who worked for Aston said they would continue their own V8 and be producing a new V8. Unless it started as am AMG V12 and is being licensed and modified by Aston.

Given the V12 it is hardly a difficult job to lop four cylinders off. In manufacturing terms it is easy. Capacity at Fawd in Cologne likely to be the only issue.

So what are they getting from AMG?
the 5.2 litre v12 twin turbo that's coming and is previewed in the video is a comprehensive rework of the existing 5.9 litre V12 (sometimes referred to as a 6 litre) - we know it will be in the DB11. One assumes in time it will appear in other states of tune, either in DB11 or possibly (probably) other models too. It will be made at AML's engine plant in Germany, where the current V12 is made

AML will also 100% definitely (it's been publicly announced) be buying a version of the AMG 4.0 twin turbo V8 already in use by Merc/AML, for instance in the AMG GT. The extent to which it is 'bespoke/tuned' for AML is the subject of some conjecture- the general consensus is that AML may overstate the extent to which the engine they use differs from the standard AMG unit which already comes in varying states of tune

Which cars the AMG V8 engine appears in is the only matter of conjecture - one school of thought is that it will power both the new vantage and the DB11 in time. There was a school of thought that the AMG unit would replace the V12 twin turbo in the DB11 a few years into it's model life- personally I can see them offering both in time, a little like Bentley with the Continental, with the V8 possibly being the better package but the V12 selling on outright power stats & prestige

I doubt they will continue to make their own V8 naturally aspirated engine once the current vantage is replaced this time next year, which is the only car it currently appears in, as the new AMG unit should be a relatively similar price, with more power, lighter weight and better fuel efficiency but no statement has been made about the current AML V8 engine's future. I suppose it's possible they have the new vantage with a very high power version of the AMG V8, in which instance they could offer that alongside a version of their own naturally aspirated V8 but again personally, I doubt it - the engine is just too old and what's the point in continuing to develop it when turbo seems the way forward and they have deal to buy the AMG V8. IMO, base level new Vantage will have to have equivalent power to the highest power F types and I just don't see that happening with the current naturally aspirated engine, however it's developed

The plant where the existing V12 is made - that'd be Ford in Köln, then?
That's where it will be manufactured yes, but I believe one of the aforementioned British-based engineering consultancies has played a heavy part in its re-design/development (not Ricardo!).

As other posters have pointed our, the V12 is nothing to do with AMG either!.

I still can't understand why Aston Martin of all people are going turbocharged. They're never going to be able to meet EU corporate emissions rules, not unless they launch a sub-brand with a volume-selling MX-5 rival...
