RE: Peugeot 308 GTI: UK Review
Discussion
My God that is bland. Very Bland. I mean the 205 was hardly in your face but it was still a really handsome car. Having said all that 270bhp from a 1.6 engine ? That is impressive, and as someone else mentioned previously there is a decent spec for your money, even if the money is strong.

those pics don't do it justice...its actually a nice looking car. Its a shame when its being down trodden before anyone has actually driven it. 270bhp from a 1.6, low tax, 150mph+, LSD... i bet its a better everyday driver than a few other "hot" hatches.
I agree - as I tried to convey in the article it is a real shame that many people will dismiss this without ever giving it a chance. I'm those that do buy them will not be disappointed. Maybe the customer type would be someone whom just wants the range topper 308.
It is pretty damn quick though and those tyres, LSD & Brakes are lovely. I'm amazed they've achieved just over 1200kg along with massaging seats.
What are the other manufactures playing at? Or is this that grey area concerning quality?

Having seen one in the flesh they are a pretty decent looking car IMHO. Plus compared to most other hot hatches these days they are all a bit bland, the Golf GTI, Leon etc.... all pretty bland, no?
These will be a bargain in a few years but right now I'd be hard pressed to choose one over a megane sport.

I see a dark blue one of these almost every morning and thought it looked quite nice. Maybe a little safe the styling similar to the Leon but I still thought it looked decent.
I never understand why some manufacturers have such high rrp and then offer huge discounts as some people will be put off by the initial price.

I'm very tempted to cancel my Focus RS order for one. I just love the looks inside and out. And that tiny steering wheel is fun as a driver. After it, normal steering wheels feel like they're from a lorry
Well, the novelty of having the only one in the country would be nice.Jimmy Recard said:

Aaaand this is why they do small, chunky steering wheels: because normo's think that a small wheel equals 'sporty' and wouldn't know steering feel if it stamped on their foot. A pretty attractive car without the horrible paint job.
Review sounds damning with faint praise.
I drove the RCZ-R on track as part of a tuition package and felt pretty much the same. It was pretty good, quick and fairly well composed, but didn't blow me away. The engine seemed quite laboured delivering its power, I guess as the small capacity motor is really having to work hard. I came away from it with respect for what it could do, but wouldn't buy one.
I was very happy to get back in my 370Z afterwards for a few more laps.

While I, as anyone else, wonder what the person who validated the paint theme is smoking/snorting, I feel the article is overtly harsh.
The styling is handsome in real life (without the coke-head paint theme) and will appeal to petrolheads. A Focus RS with Godzilla appendages, it isn't. It is more understated like a Golf GTI with a wider, lower, road-hugging stance.
I didn't feel any inconfort about the wheel size and position, and I'm quite fussy with my seating position.
What really surprised me was how fast the one I followed could go on broken tarmac. I gave up following one with a F56 Cooper S (17", standard chassis and passive dampers).
I am no Peugeot fanboy, but I feel like the badge snobbery was strong on this piece.

Firstly, this will depreciate much faster than a Golf.
Secondly, having had a 208 as a holiday rental car (non-GTI), I can say that the terrible wheel and instruments would be a deal breaker, they are plain annoying.
Ultimately, I would just buy a Focus ST.

I like the car, yes the paint scheme is crazy but...it's an optional!! Don't tick it.
I think Peugeot have come leaps and bounds of late and the 308 is a decent car IMHO. The GTI is not the hardcore that everyone wants (but wouldn't buy in the real world) I think the only reason this car is not going to sell well is two fold: 1- badge snobbery; 2- Financing options, more specifically expensive PCPs.
Only a small proportion would care about the less focused approach, unless it's a track day car I think that softening the edges of a hot hatch is the way to go, makes it a great all around car for 80% of driving and still fun enough for that more spirited B road.
I don't care for Peugeot but feel people are giving it a bit of an unfair review. As for blandness... A Golf GTI is worse.
If I was in the market for that segment hot hatch I would consider a test drive at least.
