I thought about getting a DB9 a few years back (had a 997 2S at the time). Despite being much bigger than the 911 the rear was a joke - tried putting in my child seat from the 911 and it wouldn't fit at all. Gorgeous looking car though.

Unfortunately I think you have to accept that its a 2 seat GT with luggage space behind the seats biggrin
Then it makes sense a bit more

I was looking at DB9s recently but in the end it just didn't really make sense to me. Big car but very limited interior space and not very good boot space so doesn't really fill the GT car brief either.

Now turned my attention to Vantages hehe

With a v12 shoehorned into it or a v8? Vantages are quite fun (and don't have an obscene amount of power) so you can really drive it flat to the floor... (when roads and traffic allow)

Apparently they are really quite reliable and don't go wrong too often. Some models had paintwork/corrosion issues, but they should of been addressed by now. Cheaper to run than a DB7 is what I hear.
Damn, that doesn't help my sensible side when doing man-maths..

I wish I could afford a V12V!! Budget might allow for a 4.7 though smile

Best to go into the Aston sub forum for in depth information. Loads of information and friendly forum. A few things to watch for on the V12 engine and early cars.

Always fancied one of these to replace my Tuscan S. Nice simple NA V12 with plenty of poke, rock solid ZF gearboxes, passive suspension. I suppose only typical British car wobbly electrics to worry about. How are they space wise for a very tall driver?

No wobbly electrics at all unless the battery is going duff. Thank the Ford influence of the Volvo electrical architecture for that.
Space wise, the Vantage has a bigger cabin for the driver.

That's a shame to hear. I've always thought one of these would feature in my future at some point but no usable rear seats is a deal breaker. Strange as you say, the DB9 looks rather large on the outside.

It depends what you mean by very tall. I am 6 feet tall, but have relatively short legs and a long back, so I have had trouble with some cars, but no problems with a DB9. It is true what others have said though - there is no room for a rear seat passengers' legs if the front seat passengers are about average height.

Having sold my air cooled 911, I was so looking forward to buying a DB9... Until...

- I drove several of them. Driver involvement is a little disappointing. But I get it, it is a big GT.

- Massive disappointment, to me, however was poor packaging. How can such a big car from the outside be so small inside? Both boot and passenger space to the point that absolutely none can seat in the back frown

Which made me finally realise (after 20 years of ownership) how good a package a 911 is. And I bought a 997 2 S smile

Early DB9's are easily the best looking modern Aston... such simple, clean lines... beautiful car.
They are hand-bitingly pretty, although I also like the muscularity of the "old" Vanquish.
I agree, simple and elegant styling, nothing fussy. My favourite DB9 is the 'Virage' from 2011/2012...it's perfect.

Have a 2009 model DB9 now for 4 years after having had a model year 2007 before. No major expenses except annual maintenance and the 5 year BIG maintenance which costs a bit more. Wish they would have made one with sliding roof though, so it feels more open.

As others said, can be a bit cramped but by adjusting the seats, it fits my 1.86cm. Boot is relatively small (smaller than my VW polo), so back seats are extra luggage space.

Still think it is one of the most beautiful car designs of last decades, that's why I keep it ;-)

Cheers,
F

No mention of engine 'tick' noise, ultimately requiring a rebuild; maybe not a widespread issue?

Liners and small ends, nasty failures.

Anything close to 100k should be listened to very carefully for this noise - even with regular services in the book

Amazing engine though - always keeps the oil golden even after hard use

These come into my thinking fairly regularly, but I do wonder if I'd be better off with a Maserati Granturismo?

Actually has 4 genuinely usable seats, lovely V8, supposedly not that unreliable (variator issue aside) and apparently significantly better to drive than the DB9. Price wise they seem to be hanging at a similar level to the DB9, albeit being slightly newer with 4.2 and 4.7 variants available.

Anyone actually considered and tested the two and come to a conclusion?
