I don't have anything against the former Top Gear presenters but I suspect, because of the popular association with the them, the new site may attract a very lot of kids and idiots. It may even act as a convenient vacuum for them.
This. I imagine DriveTribe be made up of a different type of person on the whole, a few but not as many motoring geeks/diehards as those who are semi-interested in cars and those who take Clarkson's words as if they were breathed by God himself.

Drive Tribe sounds a good name and they are obviously marketing it differently. I wonder if this name will also be used across into the Amazon show.
I was wondering that as well.....

driveltribe.com sounds better
Agreed.

And considering Clarkson's particular combination of ignorance and chauvinism, I'd have expected diatribe.com

I signed up to it and submitted an application for the "talent" section. They have asked me to be one of the "tribe leaders"

I don't pretend to know much about cars, there are a lot of more knowledgeable people than me and I spend a lot of my time in the background of these forums just reading the posts an discussions.

I am personally looking forward to seeing what comes of this drive tribe, if only for my own personal gain and some exposure to my blog and content creation work. smile

I am aware it's probably going to be very "click bate" heavy and probably have a slant to selling products to the masses, but if in the mids of all the advertising, some of the writers can bring you the odd useful and interesting article, then it's worth having in the favourites bar on your internet browser isn't it?

I think they've let everyone who emailed them be a "tribe leader". My twitter was full of RTs of people with 20 followers saying they've been selected.

I've not got any particular interest in joining another car forum tbh, one is enough. I'll wait and see if it's any good before signing up.

Will it have forum software from this century. Will it be designed to work on mobiles. I'm tired in living in 1999.
That is the question.

After reading what they are hoping these "tribe leaders" will be (essentially content creators) I have to say that someone who has made 9 posts in just under 7 years, doesn't pretend to know much about cars and prefers to spend their time in the background on forums just reading sounds like an ideal candidate.

It essentially sounds like they're trying to get in on the youtube car scene. Huge numbers of people watch car related drivel on youtube and obviously there's a lot of ad revenue available. I see no mention of payment either.

Just because I don't post on here very often doesn't mean I don't contribute elsewhere regularly! wink

I have done stuff for Silverstone Auctions, Performance French car magazine and even Evanta Motor.co in the past and my full time job is content creation for a Higher Education Institution.

The content that I plan to make for the site is more learning about peoples passion and giving a voice to the over looked brands and groups. I already do it in my spare time as I enjoy finding out about cars that the Media don't tend to chuck a spot light on.

So while I openly admit, i'm not clued up on book figures of the latest super cars, I am able to put together something different for an audience to read.

As I also said, if it flops, it's no skin off my nose. I will take any exposure I can get from it while it lasts.

I also did wonder how many people they have selected to do it! I think anyone who has their own blog and some content published under their name can get a shot at it!

I am still looking forward to contributing, I am under no illusion there will be a lot of us and it will all be unpaid, but if it gives me another string to my bow, i'm not complaining.

Only just joined PH, but lurked around carthrottle for a while. The articles were ok but 99% of the comments were absolute garbage. No intelligent conversation, just unfunny "memes" (I think that's the word confused) I suspect DriveTribe will attract a similar sort of community.

Much prefer PH (and the old style website), seems to have a much better community who can string together intelligent posts, and I would expect it to continue to thrive despite the competition.

"THERE'S NO GRAND-SCALE ONLINE MOTORING COMMUNITY WHERE PEOPLE CAN MEET AND SHARE VIDEO, COMMENTS, INFORMATION AND OPINION."

Alright not 100% the same but a bit insulting to PistonHeads really! At least when I went to mention this on the article where I first heard about DriveTribe (on The Verge) someone had already said it smile

More insulting to CarThrottle.com who are of a much similar target audience, and I think do more traffic than PH now

Yer, that bit did make me laugh. Reminded me of the Monty Python "What have the Romans ever done for us" sketch.

There are no grand-scale online motoring communities out there.

Apart from Final Gear forum, Pistonheads and Car Throttle.

Yes, but without those, there are no grand-scale online motoring communities out there.

Apart from EVO forum and the millions of owners club forums and facebook pages.

But again, if we ignore those, there are still no online communities.

Apart from Jalopnik and Petrolicious.

Is it a car forum? I just assumed it was a facebook-based group for school-age virgins.

ETA: I just logged onto it and... well, I feel like I've just taken a glimpse into the 21st Century. Not that I should be surprised of course: PH stopped being the internet motoring pioneer when Ted left.

Really ?

I've just spent 15 minutes on there and couldn't find any interesting content.

Unless I'm missing something - on "old crap forums" I can see perhaps 30 topics per screen page so I can find content quickly.

On Carthrottle I seemed to only be able to load 1.5 topics per page - lots of pictures slowing things down and taking up space but not much else.

Those guys who are tribe leaders, what tribes are you going to be leading?

I would say Carthrottle (and hopefully DT) have at least one advantage over PH, in that they don't have brutal policies regarding "monetised" videos or "self-promotion", which is a shame as I expect a lot of threads have to skirt around putting up things like videos and links thanks to these unfortunate rules

How does being a copy cat equal being a pioneer. I tried CT twice, not being a FB wker I came out if shattered. There's no logic in that interface.

Beats me. I've never used it either.
Have you seriously never heard of one of the worlds biggest websites or is it just an un-amusing way of a man in his late 40's to early 50's to say he doesn't use Facebook?
