Why the 640d? At least choose the 640i or the 650i.

It is meant to be all about taking the mountain passes instead of the autobahns and enjoying the engine notes as you go through the tunnels etc. As good as the 640d is, the petrol captures the spirit of a GT far better.

What you are talking about is getting from A to B the quickest way with the least amount of stops, which I think is completely different.

Diesel can do the job.

But, here what PHers here are saying is we don't want diesel to do the job.

For me, it's got to be a Nissan Skyline GT-R. Sufficient pace, sufficient presence and enough space for the necessaries.

Or for anyone who can afford the kind of monthly repayments that are flying around this thread:

I can't help but find the value component incredibly appealing.

If I was in the game for one I'd go for a full spec s class coupe.

Bloody hell, we're on the 11th page and people are still suggesting cars with back-breaking rides and boots the size of a bread bin.

The new S class Coupé is a worthy contender. However it's got to be the flagship Aston for me (with the better ZF box).

I think the obvious modern GTs have been covered.

But what about classics?

How far back would you go? I think late 60s to the mid 70s produced the most beautiful single minded 2+2 GT cars in my opinion.

A great GT, very engaging in the wet.

Yes. The early 70s, pre fuel crisis is when GT cars were king. Swift (different frim being simply "fast"), comfortable, big engine with big range. And they must, simply MUST look and sound right when you arrive. A Gt car is all about the journey, and part of that is the arrival. For this reason, a diesel, no matter how competent or Audi-ish it is, will never make it as a pucker GT car

This, however did very nicely: the fastest 4 seater in the world when launched. 160mph DBS V8

I'd go for a classic ghibli cup. Yeah it's crap but I love them and always backed the wrong horse.

Agreed.

I assume that is your classic candidate, then?

Good choice. I always will choose Italian from that era, though:

Correct colour.

I actually am a huge fan of those, but I think a 4200 GT is a safer bet!

It's also a more modern contender - it deserves to join the "modern classic" list.

Your choice is the better one. I'm swaying to the early 90s 3 box plastic panel design revamped biturbo.
Need to go back to the age of ten and sit in the back of multiple sportscars with 2+2 design.
3.0 csl? There are a lot. ...

Doing the job is for workmen.

Grand Touring is for gentlemen of means and leisure and style. (Let's pretend gentlemen, anyway.)

We are not top salesmen in a hurry to a photocopier conference on the outskirts of Bremen: we are playboys with an impossibly glamorous and sophisticated dinner date in Barcelona.

Hard not to love the DBS. 928 gets my vote, Jaguar XK, too; Mercedes-Benz SL is quite effective, too, though not the current model (too wide, too ugly). Then the more discreet and reliable Italians. Citröen SM. As well as range and power and comfort and all that measurable, definable stuff, there is the magical element of style and beauty which we all recognise but could not possibly circumscribe in words. But it is not powered by diesel and it does not have black wheels!

And you just need Matt Monro playing 'on days like these' as you drop down into monte carlo for dinner with a blonde in the passenger seat !!!

Doesn't work so well in an A6 Diesel !!!

Works much better in a Ferrari v12

That XK 5.0 looks ideal. Lovely looks, aluminium chassis, plenty of power (same as the older XKR) but without the complexity and stress of the charger. What a great all rounder GT. When they hit £15k for a minter I'll be very tempted.

I must confess to a small LOL in a busy office!

Interesting how well liked the XK seems to be. Not sure about there being so much difference between the XK and the XK-R from the outside though. Basically two more exhaust pipes and the little bonnet vents. I wouldn't say the average XK-R is vulgar as one poster put it. Take a look at this one for example:

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/j...

The R's low-rev performance is absolutely effortless due to the forced induction torque so on the road would fit the GT bill even better than the XK. When driving like a gentleman, the XK-R is not noticably loud. Many owners would like more noise. The fuel consumption difference is marginal at similar speeds too. Neither are exactly economy cars.

Totally agree with avoiding dark wheels and trim though. Silver and chrome is so much more luxurious.

If I needed to cover large amount of miles matching the OP criteria of: -

It has to be quick - 0-60 in sub 5 seconds
• It has to fast - 160mph +
• It has to be comfortable and spacious for 2 people, with enough luggage space for a week
• It has to have a good range! 400 miles as a minimum. You won't always be needing that long range, but it's incredibly frustrating to fill up ever 200 miles.
• It needs to sound good through a tunnel
• It needs to have good looks - nothing too edgy or racy, but equally not too bland

I think I would go for a Porsche Panamera GTS / Turbo (if range allowed)
