Back to the 430d, has anyone compared the Xdrive directly to the rwd version in a back to back drive? The internet seems to suggest that the rwd is sharper, with the Xdrive versions having a higher ride height and softer springs plus the added weight and friction associated with 4wd which would make sense. I have never really thought I needed 4wd on my 330d so wondering if there's really a benefit?
Only 420d vs 435d X-drive, 420d seemed 'sharper' but certainly for my journey profile I preferred the softer x-drive. The M Sport suspension is far too hard over our roads.

I don't think I need X-Drive but didn't have a choice. I'd have RWD with non-M Sport suspension.
Interesting observation as I found the 320d more fun and agile through the bends than the 330d, I put the difference down to the added weight of the 3.0d engine, but of course the 3.0d is in a different league in a straight line!
I'd definitely take a look at the GC as an alternative to the tourer in future.

I've got a 435d GC. In terms of the price when I spec'd a 335d x-drive estate to the same level it was almost the same. I got a thumping discount from the dealer who were trying to make their quota. It worked out the same price as a 430d more or less so I went for the 'bigger' unit.

I have a Z4 3.0i as well so I have contrast with petrol, although the 435 would mince the Z4 without trying. And pretty much anything else on the road. It's pretty dang fast. I find the 435d has no turbo lag at all, where as the 430d can be occasionally hesitant 'off boost'. The mid range shove is extraordinary; it just sorta makes a multi-cylinder warble and heads off line a high speed train has hit it. If anything it's too fast - highly illegal numbers come up so quickly that you are always backing off. I like the way it flashes past slower traffic but seems not to be breaking a sweat.

The 4 GC works well for my family; all 5 go in when required, but often it's just me or the Mrs and the baby. I do really look forward to driving it every day - it's quite multi-character, being cosseting when I knackered or up for it when I'm in a sporty mood. I've got adaptive with 18's which I felt was the best ride compromise, It isn't the sharpest knife in the block when it comes to the steering feel though, and I've had to learn how it 'works' to try and get the placement I want in corners. This is a definite weakness,

The 435 does about 40-42mpg for me and I've usually got diving boots on. Add 10% if you drive it in ECO mode, In my view this car makes the 3 GT a waste of time - it's not as nice inside or outside as the 4 and although the space is better in the 3 it looks tail heavy.

I spec'd my 4 with a whitish colour leather (dumb with kids but it seems to be holding up) and it feels just about expensive enough inside, I'd prefer a more 6 ish interior but there you go. It's about the best daily I've had I reckon.

That may be the case but I spend more time driving in a straight line in this car. It's good at that.

That's something I noticed too with the 640d when compared to a 330d, you do notice the lag more with the single turbo versus the twin turbo.

Both cracking engines though...for oil burners.

They really have lost the plot with their model range
Have they? Why do people keep saying things like this on here. The stop liking what I don't like lot.

It's really quite simple. If you like it buy it, if not don't.

It's just a car, a piece of metal it's either a good car or not, who gives a fk what they call it.

As an owner of both (E90 M3 and a 435d X-Drive coupe) I couldn't agree more. Both as fast as each other one delivers the power with drama and beautiful V8 noise while the other does it comfortably and inconspicuously, great if you don't want any trouble!

They aren't that inconspicuous, my brother has a 430d GC sport and I have an M5 we swapped for a weekend and the GC gets way more attention! Interestingly people thought it was the new M4..

Very impressive car indeed and really makes me question the need for a M car. You just can't utilise the power on the roads where I live.

No, the 435d is a little quicker standard, mine is remapped....so, the Granturismo wouldn't see which way the 435d went ! ( hp + lbs/ft divided by kg ) = 523 ( 435d ) vs 428 ( Granturismo )

Bit late but after buying a 430d SDrive Msport plus with the adaptive dampers last week, I just searched anything 430d related to see what other people think.

I'm really not sure what people are on about when they bash the ride or the lag, this is an extremely comfortable and fast car, 0-40 or 30-70 is truly astonishing, I don't think anybody needs any more power than that! Also some people are saying bmw have lost their minds, what were they thinking, well, the reason I bought this car was that I wanted a 4 door bmw and I didn't want a 3 series, just too many of them about, wanted something a bit more special, more rare that would depreciate less and that's where the gran coupe came in, I get so many looks in it, it's low + wide stance with a sloping roofline and the frameless doors, got it in carbon black with the privacy glass so it looks so stealthy at night, I'm glad they made this car!

The only thing about the car that left be slightly disappointed is the acceleration from 90, doesn't feel any quicker than my previous 330i e46 or clk430, I guess it's down to being a diesel, that's the only thing that left me longing for the 35d or is that also the same?
